I think it may have it's origins at the BBC - it was a room where old props and things were kept, I also believe that it was a place where if anyone asked where you were, the answer would be 'oh he/she's gone to room 101' - The BBC made a show where celebs were asked what they would put into Room 101 - it was hosted by Nick (something) and then Paul Merton.

Room 101 is from Orwel's 1964; it is where evryones own nightmares live. In the book it was where Winston's nightmare of having a box of rats fitted over his head and face came true. Not a pleasant place to be.
