Last week I posted a message on the board.

The subject was the fact ( printed in the Telegraph) this week that :

17% of of the population in the uk live beyond 60 In Turkey the figure is only 8%....the same as India.

Since you more or less live in Turkey I thought this might interest you. You have a 92% chance of dying before you reach 60. This is a bit simplistic because most of you are already over sixty and the figures are a bit skewed becuse you have lived most of your lives in the UK.

But the fact that Turkey's figures are the same as India's surprised me.

You have probably all gone to sleep now. Or deleted me !

As interesting as the figures are Begonia, do you really believe that moving back to the UK at this stage would benefit you if you were critically ill.

Statistics can be interpretted in many ways.

One point I would make is that in the UK, the medical health system pulls out all the stops to keep patients alive regardless of their chances of full recovery or wether the period of longevity is extended far.

Most other countries do not utilise the resources as much to extend a life that is probably not for a very long period.

Whether you agree with this happening or not doesn't matter but it is a fact of life. When my father was on his way out the doctors pumped him so full of drugs purely to keep him alive until my mother tiold them to stop that he did not know anything that was going on or recognise anybody who came to see him.

Statistics would show that in the UK one more patient was kept alive for 2 weeks longer than in other countries but its not actually relevant.

Begonia, you've made the mistake of thinking it's where you live not how you live your life and your genetics that determine such things.

Newlad....I think they have decided that you will live longer if you are a bit overweight rather than underweight. They have also decided drinking red wine...in moderation...does not make you put on weight. I am banking on it anyway !

Proger....I couldn't agree more. I have seen several of my friends having their lives prolonged for no good reason recently.
