Three people check into a hotel.



They pay $30 to the manager and go to their room.



The manager finds out that the room rate is $25 and gives $5 to the bellboy to return.



On the way to the room the bellboy reasons that $5 would be difficult to share among three people so he pockets $2 and gives $1 to each person.



Now each person paid $10 and got back $1. So they paid $9 each, totaling $27.



The bellboy has $2, totaling $29.



Where is the remaining dollar?

If the Room is $25 and he returns $1 each to the three people that is $28 dollars he kept $2 for himself making a total of $30 there is no extra dollar....

Your answer misses the point - how do you explain the fact that the 3 paid $9 each (=$27) and the bellboy kept $2 (=$29) - the riddle is that if you look at the equation in different ways, you get a different answer.....

simple, the 27 they paid between them included the 2 the bell hop kept. The three they got back makes 30.
