This piece was taken from a recent interview in the Daily Vatan.

When asked his opinion on Christofias Talat replied,

The south has a leader who the entire world believes wants a solution.Howeverif you ask me,his desire has not been clearly expressed. This is because in the 2004 referendum, the current Greek cyprot president waged a no campaign in order to make the solution more concrete. In my opinion Christofias is not innocent,he is in fact blameworthy.Nonetheless, this year he ran his election campaign on a solution platform.

No solution and independence for the north would be my vote. The most worrying thing as i see it though is what the outcome will be in Turkey with the

A.K.P. paty,

Paul.

Hilltop,

I believe if the akp are ousted turkkey would look more to the middle east which could have serious consequences for the trnc and any chance of a solution.I suppose it could mean that northern Cyprus could be governed by iran and other middle east states.Which doesnt bare thinking about. But that could just be me being pessimistic again,

Regards,

Paul.

newlad,

er....

are you sure you mean iran?

iran is a shiite nation and sunni muslims the turks would never choose

to be controlled by iran (or anyone else for that matter)

and they would not allow their support for north cyprus to be undermined

and, um, if iran gets the bomb and is not immediately blown to bits by one or two countries I can think of,

both turkey and egypt have hinted they will join the nuclear club themselves

yes there are serious political tensions in turkey which may pan out in a variety of ways but the whole situation is different to some middle eastern states where there is an angry and dangerous anti-western and anti- government undercurrent

as I understand it the ak get support from fairly moderate business people mostly in the provinces, pitted against the bosphorus elite and the generals

as regards my vote, it would be for a larger disposable income and being eternally young but it has about an equal chance of being influential as yours

There is no way ~Turkey would be controlled by Iran (can't believe you said it)

They are a proud nation & I feel that they will remain secular and that (unlike some countries) the army will always defend the people. If you live in Turkey you would understand this. It is a forward-looking nation on the whole & looks

to the west more than the east (as Ataturk recommended)

Hi Guys,

I suppose a hornets nest would be an understatement. But surely if the akp party were closed down then they would not want to turn to the east. And the west would not welcome them.Which would mean that they would find themselves in a very compromising situation.Yes Andre i did mean Iran as a worse case scenario,

Regards,

Paul.

Hi Paul,

Turkey will always be courted by the West. A perfect buffer, with a huge military.

Uncle Sam is always in there with his chequebook., but I think the EU at the end of the day.

Paul,

I may well be naive, but....AT THE END OF THE DAY, when all of the emnity is out of the system, someone (EU) is going to say , that without someone doing something , the forecast for Global warming, is..... this island is going to become a desert......... Now then "this island" is a part of the EEC. "Ouch".

Now then...."Is not someone with the Authority going to say......."Listen here you guys, I do not give a S---T what has happenned in the past, if you do not come to this table and shake hands, there is going to be nothing to talk about.

I can see that a unified Cyprus is what the EEC NEEDS! It is ( according to the family of man) , part of the( LEGITIMATE COMMUNITY)

NO ONE, AND I MEAN NO ONE, should forget what has gone on in the past. As an outsider, I have read the pain, and it will, nor should it be forgotten. I am sorry guys, that is history. We need to move on.

Will there be an amicable settlement? I really don't know. But if the choice is living like nomads in the desert, or shaking hands, and living together as a community, as( incidentally they used to, before the politicians became involved). I think that I know what the decent people of Cyprus, will choose.

GC will say we will bring in tankers of fresh water, from the mainland. Nonesense. OK as a plaster, but a non starter, as a long term solution.

The issues that are currently being debated, are irrelevant. No water, no way forward!,

I am the last person to want to ride slipshod over peoples. feelings, hurt, pain. but how do we move forward?

EEC, put your hands in your pockets, and pay for the pipeline.......Let them argue about the past ( get it out of their systems) and them tell them that without a handshake, Cyprus will be a desert. There will be no cake to argue about! Cut out the middle man, and move on!

I can well imagine the responses, and the vitriol but..........IN YOUR HEART, OF HEARTS do

you really see another way?

Wyn,

Excellent post mate.A few months ago i wrote a pessimistic piece (so out of charachter i know) about cyprus becoming a desert, but it never received much press so i went away and buried my head in the sand.It seems to me that the politicians are doing the same.I understand that 2060 has been quoted,i personally think it will be much sooner when the water levels rise and the water sweeps in.

Time for action is now and i cannot understand why this is not on any of the mandates of either the greek cyps or the turk cyps. Its time to move on,stop the squabbling, get around the table with a blank sheet of paper and say hey if we dont do this there will be no bloody cyprus left be it north or south.Wyn i take my hat offto you for writing your last post. And i think alot of people will agree,

Pessimistic,

Paul.

I do not think water is as strategically important as some would make out. There are many countries in the world that equally suffer the problems that Cyprus has with its water shortage. Ever been to Dubai? Very green in places. Read somewhere on the other site that Quater is even greener. Perhaps this is because they have heavily invested in desalination plants? This will be the way they choose to move forward rather than unite to solve the water shortage.

Paul,

Never in my wildest opinions could I ever see you, writing a pessimistic article.

You my friend are a good guy.

Anxiety is part of modern day living.

Give Mr Talat and Mr Christophis time! They have to satisfy the sensibilities of their people.

At the same time they are realists. Of course they will play politics!

I remain convinced of their stated aims!!

I feel that only the TC's/GC's can decide what they wish to happen to their Island. Unfortunately it will be the politicians that are most likely to be the ones that call the tune on this one. Its too early to guess what Talat and Christofias have in mind. Lots of talk so far but very little action. However purely from my own view point, I would simply be happy for the trade embargo to be lifted, direct flights and an agreement on the property problem. As a start this would allow both communities to move forward.

Wyn,

An Effes shortage oh no. The consequences would be that hubby would not bother going to Cyprus and I would have to go by myself with a case load of Black Tower!!!

My father who is also partial to Effes Dark (too partial) would also not bother accompanying me. Just a minute this sounds like a good idea. Peace at last.

Effes........What do they make it with?

Bradus, Sue, god bless her..... drinks Black Tower . A formidable intellect, much loved, but she needs to learn, that some people do not appreiciate intellect, and rational argument.

Sue, I repeat.... my old dad....(now deceased) used to say......Even the dull and ignorant.....they too have their story! Avoid them!

Now this should be a good weekend!

Really appreiciate that. Given that a 10mtr x 5 mtr pool has 81 tons of water If you empty the pool and carry on drinking, then you will be making a contribution.

Paul,

As rumour has it, you have been to Gectikale Airport (thanks to your good ladies navigation skills.) What if anything is happenning?

Now Asil Nadir has come out and stated that, he effectively owns Cyprus Aviation Services.

It appears that the Greeks, own a large percentage of the equity, in the Company. Ouch!!

Why havent the British Government sized the assets, and frozen the bank account?

Now then given that they only have a 15 year lease, in which to extend the runway, develop

a charter flight operation, and build a citrus fruits distribution (worldwide) network. Someone needs to get their skates on!

Now would we have seen the explosion of growth in development in hotel rooms (currently 30% utilization) holiday complexes, villas and etc. someone was obviously expecting the Charter flights to be on schedule.

Now given that most of the Iinvestment is alledgedly Israeli, how long are they going to wait for a return on their investment.

As we all know Mossad have a way of bringing people to account.

How much longer will our friend Mr Nadir, going to sit on Aligadi beach (with his armed minders) watching the Turtles?

Am I being paranoid?

As I said, it should be a good weekend.
