We are not quite sure of the full impact but we've just been given a bombshell...

Nationwide letter received stating that from June to September they are issuing new 'Cash Card +' cards. One of the stipulations is that quote:-

'Your new card is not a credit card or cheque guarantee card. You will not be able to use your new card to withdraw cash overseas'

This may not apply to Nationwide Visa cards.

This blow came in a letter and leaflet headed 'We're improving your current account'

Groucho, is this new card in place of the Nationwide Debit card?

This cannot be correct. I received 2 cards from them two weeks ago, one a debit card, the other a visa credit card having explained to them for OS emergency use only, this having been applied for only a week earlier and I don't not even bank with them!

Just had a look on their site and there is another card called a "Cash Card" that is not the standard "Debit Card" that you get issued with as a normal account holder. Strange you should get any card from Nationwide if you don't bank with them Richard. It is most difficult to open an account with them unless you can prove a UK address and take them bills and things to confirm it - this even through they say you can open an account on-line!

Good bank mind you!

Msg 4

Surprised me too! Barclaycard charged me a 2.5% surcharge on OS use which is zero using the Nationwide credit card within the EU (TRNC considered in the EU) and only 1% outside it, hence applying for it. I sat down in their branch with passports etc. and they did an automatic credit check and was ruled okay! Another surprise! Hence all the cards and have yet to put a penny into any account and pass book too!

Just as a far fetched thought, could this be a very clever scam for you disclose your personal details?

There are strange workings afoot within the banking system around the world! I've been told that I'm now with the Co-op but no cards, can go to the opposition and get cards without dosh, and can't get money out of NZ without me going there in person! All very peculiar!

FREE - there is no such thing as a free lunch is my economics phrase. You will pay for it somewhere, if not in charges but in reduced interest.

If you live here permanently why do you still use UK services????

This thread has really got me going because one of my pet hates are banks, on par with lawyers! A story on the NZ front, BNZ who I've been with for 33 years but now owned by an Oz bank (NAB) have introduced a new system card called Eftpos; they are very happy to post it to the TRNC but can't activate it unless I present myself, in person, at a branch of theirs in NZ! Happy days, I'll just have to go next year for the Rugby World Cup! Anybody want to come along?!

cyprusishome, Because............

Our only income is from Government pensions - Military and Civil Service. Both of these are paid into UK accounts because that used to be the only place they would pay them to. Things are changing a little and now we can get some of the pension paid into overseas banks - at a cost of course! At the moment the cost is prohibitive when you take into account that they will only pay your pension into an overseas bank in sterling so every month is a gamble on the exchange rate and you would never know for sure what you total monthly income was going to be. Then there is the additional cost of the charge by the government for doing this so even at the start you are going to lose funds.

Best thing right now is to stay with the UK bank, draw sterling and exchange it to TL when the rate is good - currently it is very poor so belts are tighter than normal. Time will change all and one day our pensions will come here direct - we hope!
