Could anyone please clarify the legal minimum age limit for a moped in NC.

Please don't add the usual bumf about, they don't care or whatever you feel like seems to be the applied rule.

Just to set a precedant I thought I might try something that is legal and above board not just fitting in with the rest of the people.

Minumum age limit for a moped and if possible a car licence, also do you need to complete a driving test for the moped ?

Thanks, Paul

Definitely 18yrs for a car as my friends daughter did her test in UK at 17yrs and had no end of trouble over here trying to get a licence and insurance

Paul,

So many motorcyclists and moped riders are hit by cars and killed here, I would argue that it's just not worth the risk...

They don't appear to have learned the 'Think one, think twice, think bike!' mantra...

It's more like wacky races.... 'I want to go there, so without further ado, that's what I'll do' even if that involves driving on the wrong side of the road, which I've seen so often now I consider it quite normal.

Groucho,

As much as I appreciate the advice, I am only after the information for now.

Whether the decision goes ahead is a further step down the line. To start with I like to look into the feasabilty of a project before moving on to the planning stage.

The legality question revolves around the insurance subject.

To put it into simple terms, teenager wants independance, now know it's another 2 years for car licence need to know for bike and if it is also 18 then no problem, wait for car licence. If 17 for bike then we have another year to consider. If 16 then I got some considering to do.

Paul, your name's so good we get it twice!

OK mate/s, but don't let your desire to assuage your son's desire for freedom make you put aside your sense of family preservation. He won't be able to wear enough layers of clothing for it to be safe even if no other driver is involved, you still have accidents on mopeds... loose gravel, oil on the road, flash floods... once out of sight, how long do you think the helmet would stay on in the heat? Cyprus motorcycle wear - Flip-flops, Shorts and a T shirt..

Does he ever use the Dolmus? If not, why not? They go to most places youngsters need/want to go...

OK stop it Groucho, it's not what he wants to hear...

Hi Prodger the legal age limit for all scooters and motorcycles is 18 but don,t let groucho put you off bikes and scooters ae OK f ridden with proper training and sensibly .Personally in 2 years I have only seen 2 bike accidents but have lost count of the number of car accidents and pedestrian accidents I've seen so every thng has a risk

scootex, way ahead of you but thanks anyway.

Been riding myself off and on for several years and witnessed my fair share of incidents. Most "bikers" like to claim that the car drivers are not aware of the biker which is true in most cases but if I ride sensibly I take that into account. It's called defensive driving, in basic terms, assume the other guy is probably going to do something you would never expect and compensate for it. This works for car drivers aswell by the way.

Granted that coming off at 40 still has more danger than crashing 4 wheels at the same speed but 40 on 2 wheels is much more enjoyable.

If I want to be silly on 2 wheels I go MX but the last time I did that my back was out for 3 weeks, hence moped for now which the teenage daughter by the way Groucho, strange to assume it was a boy and not a girl, can ride (maybe, if she is reading)

Ha ha Paul, yes I did make an assumption based falsely on the notion that a girl would be too sensible to ride a moped here! ;¬)

On a boy, a duelling scar is a badge of honour... on a girl, it's just a scar.

As the age requirements are in fact the same (18) it would appear to be a no-brainer if not somewhat more expensive! Either way, happy freedom to your daughter.

As you said Groucho, no brainer.

At least now I can tell my daughter that I did consider the option of getting her some personal transport but legally I can't, better than trying to explain to her that her mother says NO.

I think she would definately prefer a car than a scooter anyway and if she has to wait the same period for either then I know what her choice will be however I remember when I sold my BMW Z3 she was more depressed than anyone so I have an inkling what kind of car she will be hoping for. 2 seats, big engine, lowered suspension, good traction and a fancy badge.

Anyone able to advise me on the import costs for a Porsche Boxter S or a 996 and if they are reasonable, anyone know the costs for a GT3 or a Gamballa, I might get one for myself

Paul,

Driving into Catalkoy on Sunday passed a Ford GT40 going in the opposite direction, blimey it made my whole car and occupants shake... BTW - going in the opposite direction is the only way you'd ever pass one.

The chap or chapess (couldn't tell) just put his/her foot down, engine roared, made as much noise as a Formula 1 car and hit 100mph in about2 seconds!

£250,000 well spent!

I know the feeling Groucho,

I once had a ferrari (not sure which but it was fast) behind me in traffic on an autobahn.

didn't look like he was going into the fast lane so I checked mirror, signal, manouver. dropped a clog floored the throttle and glanced out of my left hand window to see a red blur 3 feet to my left. Tried to chase him/her/it and was about 30 seconds until they were out of my visual range. I was in a 3.5 litre Granada.

Never seen anything move so fast, literally 2 seconds between being behind me to passing me in a flash and then left me for dust.

I was just a little jealous
