A long shot here, Okay if you don't know your Blood Group could you please go to Lefkosa Hospital in the hope that you are O positive. If not your Blood will help save someone else's life so no harm done. Blood only lasts for 2 weeks so this is why there is always an urgency in NC. Chris p.s. Directions to the Blood Bank are as you go in the gates of Lefkosa Hospital it is the first building on the right and bonus is they have their own car park.

Nurseawful, I went to give blood in the UK last yr and was told I couldn't cos I'd had a blood transfusion 22yrs ago. Apparently if you've ever had a blood transfusion, they don't want you at all. I was gutted. Do they bother about that sort of thing here? Could I still help someone?

In the UK if you have had a Blood Transfusion since 1980 they won't take your blood. Also after tattoo's and body piercings you have to wait 12 months. Pippie will find out if it is the same here and get back to you. Thanks anyway. Chris

Simple question; The UK as correctly stated will not take blood if donor has ben transfused any time since 1980. What is the situation here?

Received a text for this today (as I have put my name on your register) went straight to the hospital but apparently they routinely check BP prior to taking blood mine was far to high and I was told to wait 15 mins which I did and it did come down but only to 160 / 100 so she refused to take my blood - I tried but am obviously not acceptable as my BP is usually around this level (even with medication). Sorry Chris

Firstly a big thank you to everyone who responded yesterday either by phone, text or e-mail. Secondly we now have enough blood for the operation to go ahead. And now wait for it the biggest shock of all came yesterday when the gentleman's wife phoned me last night. Seemingly if the blood bank has the correct blood group in stock they will release it BUT only if blood from any other group is given in its place!! So the lady sent 2 people with totally different Blood Groups and hey presto the man has his blood! Oh well you learn something new every day. Chris

| Message 14 Scoop, I stand corrected it is not just the UK that carries the ban on blood being donated if you have had or think you may have had a transfusion since 1980 It is a world wide ban. It is to stop the spread of variant CJD (mad cow disease) they allegedly can't pick it up by testing the blood this was reviewed in 2004 and the ban still stands. Hope this answers you question. | Thank goodness you have enough blood for this gentleman. Just out of curiosity should the need arise again - what is the minimum time between donations? I gave blood blood at the session on 20th February 2010 so when would I be able to donate again? I know the usual wait in-between donations in the UK is 4 months but can I donate more regularly if needed in an emergency? |

I had a blood transfusion in 1999, and I would have thought that if there was anything wrong with my blood, I would know by now. I'm glad it was brought up though as I was going to the hospital next week to give blood, so would have been a wasted journey for me too.
