You could have a cable connected from that router to your laptop/pc or even if you have your own router and share the connection that way

I have a wireless router stuck on the longest ethernet cable I could find so that the signal travels 40 feet through two walls to my daughters bedroom and she only gets about 20% of the signal I recieve through the cable connection out of the same router.

If your daughter is paying for the router the she should get a cable connection from the router to her computer as this will give the best signal butr also the option to use wrieless connection if she wants to move about and still have strong signal. If it has to go in the bar because that is where the incoming signal is she will really need to get it as close to her apartment as possible and even then there is the potential that there is so much loss of signal due to all the rebar in the walls and floors.

There are booster antennas than can be added to certain types of routers but that would be added cost and I am not sure what the gain would be.

I doubt that there is an easy good solution,

Paul

Hi

The connection comes in from the telephone line and here there is a modem. This creates the broadband signal. A router distributes the signal to the devices to be connected, this can be wireless. Often the router and modem are combined.

Assuming it is a wireless signal from the router the strength will be lessened the further away you are. Solid walls and floors will make this worse. It is possible to boost the signal with repeaters or another router as a bridge.

I would recommend siting the initial router near an external wall and running a cable on the outside up to your daughters flat to connect to a wireless router there to provide her with connectivity to her laptop throughout the appartment

I think Harold has suggested the best scenario for what I believe will be the setup.

Essentially for me the best set up in NC buildings is and adsl cable (RJ45 Cat5 cable)

If there has to be a downstairs connection that the bar owner wants to use, I would have a basic multi-port router (non wireless) with a long adsl cable upstairs to your daughters place where she can plug stright in to her computer or if she insists on wireless in her flat she can then put a wireless router here.

The bar owner can then run a short adsl cable to the non wireless router and your daughter would have the option of a static cable connection without the wireless router or portable connection with wireless.

This is very similar to the way I have mine set up at home. And this way if the bar owner wants to have a wireless connection they can either use your daughters if the signal is strong enough for him and not vice versa or he can replace the non wireless router with a wireless one.

Woody,

You can add a booster to relay the signal, for example a Linksys Wireless G Range Expander Extender WRE54G

does not need to be connected to either the main router or the laptop but increases the effective range by quite some margin.

Groucho, thanks for the info, I will see if I can pick one up next week on my travels as I think this would keep my daughter happy.

Thanks Groucho again but I have an existing N1 router which according to most things I read doesn't gain anything from a booster. I may need to get a usb wireless reciever for my daughters laptop as this might be the weak point.

i use us robotics wireless router and the signal is transmitted to my neighbours house 300 feet away where she can log on on her front porch

my next door neighbour logs on through thick concrete walls but uses a relay or repeater to boost the signal

it works fine.

other option is long ethernet cable which would work but as said before with a little signal loss

good luck
