Theres more here on this link to the BBC News,

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/7465170.stm

Its a bit worrying but as Israel has got nuclear weapons and Iran hasn't yet, if they are used, the fallout will be a few thousand mile east rather than just over the horizon.

If they use nuclear weapons our houses in Cyprus will be the least of our worries.... hopefully it is just Isreal playing brinkmanship to stop Iran developing nuclear facilities.

Nuclear weapons my eye.......it will blow back on Israel.

They have threatened Iran that they will not accept any nuclear weapons. They will bomb it like they did the Syrian installation the other year. Better them than the Americans....they would miss and hit Cyprus!

You have got a point there, Tiggy.

Ever since the 2nd world war, the yanks have had a bad track record when it comes to bombing their allies!

The Germans had a saying that when the Brits came over, they ducked!

When the Germans came over, the Brits ducked!

When the Yanks came over, everyone ducked!

I just can't believe the Iranian Presdent Iminadinnerjacket is taking such risks with his country against a determined nuclear armed adversary!

What neighbour would come to his aid? Iraq, Afghanistan, Russia?

Maybe his old mate Robert Mugabe?

If I was in Iran, I'd be seriously worried.

I heard on the BBC news tonight that George Bush was determined to

destroy Iran's "nuclear capability" before he leaves office next year.

This would be another terrible mistake which would cause more & more

repercussions. Israel I suppose, can count on Bush's support for their

threats

phylray,

Exactly what I have been reading. Bush has six months left in office, and he is alledgedly

determined to sort out the Iranian problem. before he leaves office.

I personally am convinced. The Guy is a nutter. The Pentagon have been planning an attack for 2 years now.

firstly it is probably not possible to destoy iran's naughty bits by bombing,

many of the installations are far underground, some may still be secret

and in the case of isfahan there could be a radiation release if successful

secondly there is the question of collateral damage, ie civillian deaths (again)

thirdly the iranian regime would then go into overdrive to get the bomb

or try to mount a programme of terrorist attacks, low-tech but quite unpleasant

so that's it then?

er no...

an american president may well consider a clinton-style cruise missile attack

which would surely do an enormous amount of damage, (take out a lotta stuff)

but not seroiusly impair iran's nuclear ambitions (if there are any),

and then he could then declare total victory, problem finally solved (not)

but the israelis would use hundreds of jets and do more significant damage

to iran's actual nuclear programme, while probably losing pilots to ground fire

and in the process making it be clear to all players they would again

do whatever they think is "justified" in the future, "make-my-day" style

iran will respond by trying to pump up the militias they support through syria into unleashing a huge blizzard of katyusha rockets against israel

all the above will engender vast amounts of hand-wringing from the west,

including the usual sententious and moralistic sermonising from the eu

finally. because none of this scary stuff has happened yet,

and the technical and political complexities are a bitch

the effects may be neither easily predictable nor simply quantifyable

alternatives include:

a u.n.-style fudge of the whole crisis and underlying issues, i.e. a paper "deal"

the resignation of ahmenadinajad on health grounds possibly described as a stress-related illness on the sick note and greeted with great relief by the rest of the iranian regime, while the nuclear programme continues regardless

if the manure does indeed collide with the air-conditioner, ie there is bombing,

followed by tremendous amounts of huff and puff from all sides (including eu)

somehow the rest of the world survives nonetheless and moves on

the start of a major middle-eastern war (and cyprus property values tumble):

well... I'm not sure if any side really wants that mainly because they cannot see how anybody can achieve total and permanent victory in the medium term

as regards n. cyprus, if there is serious agro because it is close to the region

(at least on the map) tourists and investors will indeed be scared off in droves,

but neither turkey or greece nor the so-called republic of cyprus have anything

whatsoever to do with this crisis, except maybe to care for the future injured

if iran has the bomb and gets to keep it, it is highly likely that both turkey and egypt will want to acquire a nuclear weapon too and neither have any love or affection for the iranian regime whatever some people on this board may think

Bradus,

Probably a nuclear winter before your PTP. But as long as you haven't handed over any money you may be OK.

i don't think that the uk,usa or israel have the right to tell iran what to do in their own country. yes the leadership of iran is a problem but let the iranian people deal with it. we have friends inside iran who tell us that nobody voted this leadership into power. they are all waiting for another reveloution to deal with him. when he step too far out of line maybe this will happen. all iranians are not suicide bombers like portrayed on t.v, why go and bomb innocent people?

Firestarter you are 100% correct.

USA and Israel think they can ride roughshod over every one and they are followed by a***lickers like Blair etc who think they will gain kudos by doing so.

As with Iraq, despite what anyone thinks of the leadership nobody has the right to invade another soveriegn state.

The only way Americans learn anything new in geography is by politicians starting a new war and it is time it stopped.

To my knowledge Iran have not directly attacked or indicated an attack against any one. Unless you count the set up events by the U S Navy with gun boats in the Gulf.

In the sixties I like many supported Israel in their fight against the Arab world but now I feel Israel are the chief instigators of all the troubles in the middle east and it is time the west woke up to that fact.
