Some sad news. At 9 this morning a light colour alsatian died on the side of the road from what I guess maybe poisoning. Can't get hold of KAR. If anyone knows who this dog belongs to please respond here. It was very distressing.

Thats bad news Tulik. Whereabouts was the dog found? It may be an idea to let others know so that they can avoid that area for the time being. If it was poison I doubt that the poor animal got far before collapsing.

Five lots of poisoned beef were found on the mountain road going uphill past Ambilliea Village (Bellapais) yesterday by a local guy out walking his dog. He has collected it all and taken it to the authorities but is very, very annoyed and upset by the whole thing. Has warned to stay away from this road for the time being until investigations are completed. No dogs hurt as far as I know - locals very upset by this and possible damage to fox's, birds etc in local area.

There is a dead Alsation type dog , light sandy colour outside Arabaci villas, near to Five Fingers Bungalows, and I have photographs, but cannot upload. It has no collar. Is this the same one you saw Tulik? If someone can help I can email them to you.

Is the poison put down to kill wild dogs, and is it being eaten by tame pets ? Are just some sicko about.

Yes thats the one I was with this morning. It was still there at 12 today. No answer at KAR. How can these people not care about the suffering of an animal, stray or otherwise.

The reason i was asking if it was wild dogs people are trying to eradicate. If it is perhaps they could be persuaded to use cage traps so the dogs could be caught and put down humanly . There does seem to be a problem with packs of wild dogs which can be seen when driving in the early morning

Tony

I can see your point here. Pack dogs are a nuisance (through no fault of their own) and are, sometimes, frightening. With regard to your views about using cage traps and the dogs being "put down humanely" - who is going to do this? I read on here time and time again that it is against some kind of "rule" (don't ask me - I've never got to the bottom of it) that they "refuse" to put a healthy dog down in NC. Let's suppose that the pack dogs are healthy - what happens to them when they are caught? A wonderful idea, I'll grant you, but, in the meantime, not only are strays being poisoned - and, by the way, I certainly do not agree with that, but pets, also. Sadly, I see no solution to the problem of the poor things. I advocate humane euthenasia (I know that probably won't go down well), but I see no short term or long term solutions, unfortunately. I only wish I did.

Clearly, we cannot continue simply talking about it. We need to start brainstorming and see where that gets us. Jeannie brings up excellent points, what to do with them after they are caged? Often it appears as though many residents expect quite a bit from KAR. According to their website, they rely solely on donations for funding. However, the Turkish Cypriot farmers receive thousands in grant money from the EU. http://www.cyprus-mail.com/cyprus/turkish-cypriot-farmers-benefit-eu-grants/20100224.

Can we start there then? How do we start pressuring the receivers of these grants to take more of an interest in this problem? Do we contact the EU Aid Program and can they help us apply pressure? Do we attend the next award ceremony and protest?

Clarify...

"Protest -" I don't mean show up throwing tomatoes at people. Can we legally assemble(?), congratulate recipients then ask them to join our efforts to eradicate the problem? We're not making progress on this forum but there are plenty of members with huge hearts. I saw a thread about the police department and residents working together regarding crime.

I don't have the answers either. I'm asking can we all (expat and nationals) come together regularly for discussion and brainstorm this horrible problem. Surely nobody wants any animal to suffer a cruel and painful death.
