Can anyone recommend the best form of weaved material for the standard pergola and where i can get it from, preferably east of Kyrenia. Any other ideas other than the standard white canvas would also be appreciated

Berty,

Call Cengiz (pronounced gen-gizz) on 8697512, he speaks good English, his wife makes good canvas stuff and is very reasonably priced...

Try Mermaid Fabrics on the left of the road going from Catalkoy to Girne.

Thought about using the green open weave fabric the builders use? Some will say its no good and has to be replaced every couple of years or so but the same will be true for the canvas that most of us see all around.

PLUS it's probably WAY cheaper and a DIY enthusiast might do a good job. Good Luck

we decided against canvas and have a material that is similar to that of outdoor umbrellas. we bring it down at the end of summer, put it in the washer and then put it up again on the pergola in spring. is much cheaper than canvas but has the same effect and we are really pleased with it. got it from the upholster in karaolonoglu, on the industrial estate.

Contact Mark Jehan who has top quality material that is used for sails. Not cheap but when it lasts for years then it works out cheaper in the long run.

Mark advertises in the Buzz Book.

The only fabric that will give you a long life is 'sunbrella' whether you can obtain it here I am not sure, there is a Turkish equivalent but nowhere as good, again I am not sure if it is available in Cyprus.

You should also ensure that the thread that is used is UV resistant to.

Berty,

The canvas supplied by Cengiz is attached via Velcro fastenings and can be taken down and washed and stored when you are not there and for the winter. It too is high quality and will last for many years is looked after in this way.

It is not white but a nice ecru colour that doesn't show dirt like a pure white does.

Most big Yapi markets sell it, I know that there is one that sells it near Marshals but that is the West of Girne

We have bamboo up on a small pergola - been there for3 years now, did expect to have to change it before now, but I think it will do another summer!! the rains gave it a good wash and got rid of insects!! Been weighing pros and cons for a bigger one outside kitchen and cant decide between getting someone in to do a weave - would want it removable for the winter - or getting 2 big bamboo mats again.

Groucho - is Cengiz east or west - we're west.

We used the chap from Hay-Hay just by the Patrol Station as you head into Girne, he was fantastic, very reasonable and altered some blinds for me too - a really good service at a very good price.

we used the green stuff for our car port & its still pretty good & after 2 years & I think it was 4 or 6 TL per mtr that was 4mtrs wide 1 mtr in length for that. If we have to replace it soon then fine as it cost us next to nothing to start with. we used cord to to weave it to the car port & a glue gun to give strength to the pre made holes.
