Two aircraft of the Red Arrows collided in midair over Crete. One pilot ejected and landed safely although injured. The other aircraft managed to land safely back at the air base. Daily Mail.

Message 5 - I disagree. The Turks use much more powerful planes. Swop them around and see what happens!!

Surely if the use more powerful planes they have to have faster reaction times? The Turkish Stars are superb... The Red Arrows are still good... the pilot was was lucky to escape with his life. That's the second collision I can remember.

I knew I shouldn't have bothered. Ask a fighter pilot from any airforce the advantages of extra power and speed is not the only one!!

Littlejohn, it's hardly the Turkish Stars' fault if the Brits have got shit planes... maybe the Red Arrows should make a public announcement before each display apologising for looking pedestrian and stating how they'd look better if only they could have more power... ;¬)

Were the Red Arrows not threatened with disbandonment a few years ago and there was a public subscription to keep them flying? Cost cutting

It is accepted of all the air display teams the Red Arrows keep the tightest formation.

Well to me they are all either very brave or very stupid to perform the moves that they do, Good Luck to them all.

Grouch Re message 9: ' The Red Arrows are still good... the pilot was was lucky to escape with his life. That's the second collision I can remember.' A few years ago I witnessed the ditching of a Red Arrows plane into the sea at Brighton. They were performing a low level two plane manoeuvre where they approach each other head on and at the last moment both perform an anticlockwise 90° roll, unfortunately one of the planes clipped the mast of beached boat and lost the tip of its wing and just missed colliding with Brighton Pier. The pilot ejected just before the plane hit the water and apart from apparently suffering from minor compression of the spine was back flying within a couple of weeks. AJ

You really need to go to an air day at some of the RAF stations in the UK or best the International Air Tattoo at Fairford. You will see many display teams, but the one to watch out for is the two prop-driven aircraft that are tethered to each other by a 1 metre long, thin wire. They take-off, do aerobatics and land without snapping the wire. I was more impressed with them than the Red Arrows.

The Irish Air Display Team Officer pilots can be identified by the series of little blue rings around the tops of their wellies !
