President Mehmet Ali Talat has said that he has been working towards reaching a lasting peace in Cyprus. `The fact that the Turks of Cyprus achieved important gains following the 2004 referendum should not be ignored` the President said.

The President – who stands for re-election as an independent – held a press conference at the Lokmaci crossing point in Lefkosa today.

The statement said that the President’s efforts only served to weaken his bargaining power at the talks, encouraging the Greek Cypriot Side to push for more concessions from the Turkish Side.

“This could endanger the rights of the Turks of Cyprus in the long run” it warned.

The statement came in response to reports in the media that preparations were underway to issue a joint statement on the 30th of March, the final meeting scheduled between the two leaders before the elections in the TRNC.
