I can't recall who recommended the shop beside Mr Pound as a solution to computer problems. I took my Toshiba laptop there, explained (via an interpreter) that it was freezing and crashing, especially when using Skype. Two days later and 60+tl poorer I reconnected my Toshiba laptop. Called in today and met by salesgirl. Made the mistake of telling salesgirl that I'd fetched laptop in for repair that hadn't happened. Salesgirl could have been a figment of my imagination, she disappeared so fast. Going South tomorrow, hope to buy a computer that will perform the functions I need. The moral of this story is, make sure that recommendations are not made by people with an interest in the recommendees. Tony ps I wouldn't have needed Skype if Paul and Gwynn, ex internet club, had fulfilled their obligations re their ticphone system. Never mind the Greeks, beware of GEEKS bearing gifts, especially fecking expensive ones, hope your cars going now ya xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Tony Msg 1 - I know nothing about computers but haver you checked just how full your hard drive is? Skype needs a large amount of space to work and if you have not got enough RAM I understand it needs some of your hard drive. You could buy an external hard drive and transfer documents, pictures & music onto it and let us know if that cures it at all. (If not I guess it can still be used as a backup drive.) Why not check with H&N as they did say it might be the RAM that is your fault? (They are supposed to be computer people.)

Tried H&N first, drove from Lemar to China Bazaar and back, didn't see H&N. Parked at Lemar and phoned. Guy answered, is that H&N says I, we're closed, says he. For good, say I, no, till Mon, says he, I've driven along the main and didn't see your shop, where are you? says I, at home, he replied. I mean your shop, it says next to Bos restaurant, says I, it is, says he. So went into one next to Mr Pound, unfortunately. Went to Pitstop this week, passed H&N, didn't know Karakum stretched that far. Plenty of space on hard drive, model is Satellite A60-672. The problem was, still is, it would freeze. Sometimes I could unfreeze by pressing ctrl+Esc or F5. Sometimes had to switch power button off. Other times it would just turn off, sometimes get a message before, sometimes not. Usually whilst I was on line, but not always. Upgraded from 256 to 1024, thought that might help, it didn't. All upgrading did was render my Aviva phone inoperable. Parked opposite Sunny Cyprus at lemar shudda gonin

upgraded from 256k!!! Have you ever considered the fact that a 7 year old laptop might just need replacing before everything dies of old age? £300 in the UK buys you a reasonable laptop.

Minertor mal is right the need for ram to operate the systems is getting worse by the year 3 years ago I bought a Dell with extra battery life for £330 1 gig ram 60gig hard drive the current replacement has 3 gig ram and 250/320 hard drive for the same money The programmes are more ram demanding let alone the windows operating systems Progress or in other words its more money having had laptops since 1994 and blown a few out of existence it does not pay to repair or upgrade inside the box it just creates a fault and failure else where I'm looking to replace mine before its four

XP will no longer run properly on 256mb of ram - stuck an extra 512mb for about £15 in my Dell and it's a different machine. I think XP needs a lot more ram than when it came out, due to patches/fixes/anti-virus/malware stuff

Msg, I know how much they are in UK, malsancak, trouble is I aren't in UK. I also recognise that at 7 years old it's past it's best, but the problems are fairly recent. In my original post I did say I was going South, hoping to buy a new one. Somebody pointed out that it was a public holiday, so no point. Will go next week, or wait until I go to UK. Tony ps on turning on laptop and after crashing a message comes up. ""no Bootable CD in ATAPI CD ROM" ctrl + Alt + Del scrolls it down through some jargon then usually welcome screen comes on.

"No bootable CD" sounds like a problem in setup. Maybe somebody has change the order of boot devices and the laptop now looks to boot from CD instead of from hard drive? Have you ever re-installed the OS? When you upgraded RAM did you leave in the original or replace it with two new ones? Tony, old is good - unless you are an avid PC gamer then there is no reason your original laptop will not do you for years to come. You have to ask yourself if your laptop filled all your needs (Skype etc) when you first bought it, because if it did it all then, there is no reason why it won't still do it now. Major problems with laptops are generally caused by loss of OS functions - poor RAM configuration - one which everyone misses is a bad or failing battery!!! Even when plugged into the mains if your laptop has a bad battery it will not work the same as before. Mick

Waddo, didn't replace anything, just told Nethouse to upgrade from 256 kbps to 1024. Nobody touched the laptop. Don't play online PC games and didn't use Skype until about 12 months ago. Still got over 5euro credit and only started with 10. Did think that the battery was failing and told the guy, via the gal, but he didn't seem interested. If the power went off the green light turned amber after a few minutes. Never used it unless plugged in to power supply. Going to UK in 4 weeks, have a newer laptop there but would rather haver a tower system here. Tony
