5 pm today. Coming back from a pleasant stay at Jessic's. Smoking in the garden and looking around me - seeing an owl on the pole of our electricity supply. Calling my wife, "Trix, come quick, there's an owl trying to nestle on the pole!" (experts may laugh, but I'm not a bird expert...). A closer look now: the small owl was caught with his claw between the pole and the electricity cable. Big problem, because I don't like ladders against poles, 6 metres or so high, at all. But someone had to do it. The pictures tell the story, the small owl is free and may nestle - somewhere else...

Yes, thank you, I'm fine and safe on the ground also...

OMG. I see that it is "to nest" and not "to nestle". Sorry!

Dear DC,

Did the owl say thank you? At this height (6 m!) you risked your life!

P.S. Can not open the first picture.

Uploading the pictures: at the moment my connection to the Internet ("Internjet") is bad so the pics I tried to upload may show errors. I'll replace them in a couple of minutes.

Every picture tells a story, and the third one down certainly does. Its as if the owl is asking to be rescued.Well done Hans, for someone who didnt want to climb up there you have done brilliant. You can look back on this experience as being a hoot,

Paul.

Brilliant, DC ! I agree with Paul that the owl seems quite resigned to its situation and is willing to accept your help. Must have been exhausted poor thing. I THINK its a Cypriot Skops ow, l but ......? How brave of you to go up there - a real Crusader! As already mentioned, the whole episode is a real hoot!

Well done DC for having a go and winning!

In GB for this sort of rescue, you would have had ten police cars, two helicopters, 6 fire engines, 20 health and safety busy bodies, and a road block!!!

Good work, as a fellow distruster of heights (I'm not scared of heights, just falling ), I commend your courage.

Was the owl happy to be rescued or was it a struggle? Those beaks are dangeous!

RE msg 31, Harold2555: The owl didn't even try to damage my hands. When I bent away the cable the bird was released and flew away. We have two owls in our area and this one may have been one of the couple. I hope to see him/her back again on top of the pole, where one of the owls usually sits, looking down for some prey. Fascinating view when you see them dive, the wings not making a sound!

To become the patron saint of England you need to be Turkish and to not speeak English. You also need to have never visited England. I suspect you fail on all three criteria.

Good for you Hans, no health & safety problem there. A daredevil 5yr old boy who got stuck up a tree at school had to stay there for 1hr because H & S rules denied teachers from rescuing him, instead staff retreated indoors to "observe from a distance". A passer by a woman climbed over a locked gate and rescued him only to get in trouble when the school reported her to the police and she was visited by a community support office and given a verbal warning for "anti-social behavour".

Thank you very much Hans. Owls are much maligned in this part of the world as harbingers of death. An excellent job of rescuing.

Must be a first that a post from Hans made it a 'hot' one without being hijacked! He must be climbing up the ladder and flying http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp18sKXaFlE !
