Hardly a day has passed in this last year that these little blighters haven't plagued us!

Now, with the onset of Spring, the fleas can add to peoples discomfort and annoyance.

An additional method of combating these pests is to spray the areas and objects where they hide and lie in wait for us juicy humans to appear.

The first area to spray with *'Permithrin' based spray are the patio, where you should spray walls, patio furniture (especially wicker - don't forget the underneath), crevices and window and door channels, and flyscreens.

The second, where people report of being continually bitten, is your office/computer room. Sandflies just love to live in the warmth of a 'desktop'! So, this area is important to give attention to, also.

You can find *the right spray in supermarkets - the Karaolanoglu 'Tempo' sells cockroach spray - it's in a silver coloured plastic bottle with a trigger mechanism spray head. Normal flyspray is inadequate, because it doesn't last long.

Cont'd: A spray which is not 'residual' is useless. Spraying with aerosols is very uneconomical, but rather than be 'eaten alive', use a cockroach effective aerosol - for instance, with the power 'Off', spray lightly in the back of the desktop. Don't forget to spray blinds, especially the rattan roll-up type, also curtains - back and front. Test spray fabrics first to ensure non-staining.

Do this and you'll be amazed how many little 'nasties & bities' you'll zap!

Also now is the time to start taking your daily dose of Vitamin B complex, this will also help in the fight of the wee bleeders.

Good to know about which spray to use! I've found the Vape cream in the green bottle very effective for keeping the biters from attacking my son.

As mentioned already - grey/silver coloured plastic bottle with the label clearly showing a cockroach motif - in Tempo, where all the fly sprays are, bottom shelf on the right, next to the wine section. Sorry, but the brand name eludes me. I buy all my agrochemicals in the South, as I know the brands.

Thanks Ernest - and just an assurance for pet lovers - 'Permethrin' based sprays are 'pet safe' - but cover up the dog and cats bowl and his bowl.

Whose bowl?

Just to add on a bit about the effect of residual insecticide. Almost all sprays leave a residual but some are more effective than others. All insecticdes in the cans in this country kill all insects, there is no such thing as a spray for just cockroaches. Insecticides kill by attacking the nervous system hence that is why you find cockroaches on their backs most of the time. Effective fly sprays should also have tetramethrin in them as well, the majority of fly sprays have permethrin or pyrethrin. In the uk we used to tell some of our customers to buy the cheapest fly sprays as they were pretty much the same.

I always use Vape "herbal" pump spray on myself (green bottle) and its really good. Its 95% deet, and as a result tastes awful - so careful using on your hands if preparing food, or eating finger food!!

Ataturk is spot-on with his advice re sprays - but, probably, in UK you have strict regulations re agricultural and domestic use insecticides, fungicides and herbicides - so, be on the lookout for agricultural insecticide sprays which contain 'Cypermithrin (should be written on the label in tiny letters, also the %). I say this, because mosquitoes and sandflies are becoming increasingly resistant to 'Permethrin, or Pyrethrin'.

In the South, available, at 'Homebase', you can buy ‘METOΣΥΠ’ - ENTOMOKTONO (INSECTICIDE) - this in handy 100cc plastic bottles. It contains Methomyl 12% EC/WV and Cypermethrin 4% EC/WV - that'll zap most of your nasties and is also good as a general garden/fruit tree spray.

Your comments on the above would be most useful, Ataturk.
