New series of history quizzes (more diffcult than the former series...). Rules as usual (I make them on the fly if necessary...). First and only prize: a CD with medieval music from Cyprus ("The Island of St Hilarion"). The question: what is wrong on this plan of Kantara Castle? Click this link: http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/Kantara_plan_Quiz_ab.jpg Answers before Saturday, 27 March, 8 pm. P.S. The right answer could be found on my website "All About All Crusades" ( http://www.allcrusades.com ), but I have temporarily disabled that page - until this Quiz-ab is done...

All I can think of is that the orientation of the map is non-standard. The North indication on the map itself seems to be correct.

RE ianwfs: This is sometimes done by cartographers when the available space in a brochure or in a book etc makes it necessary. As long as the North indication is right it's not seen as a cartographic error. P.S. It's not the right answer...

Going south from 11,12 and 13 should be latrines, a garrison and a water cistern, one of them is missing! Not sure which as Im not sure in which order they should be. But 14 points to nothing much and 15 doesnt seem to be pointing to any structure either. 16 seems to be the wrong shape for latrines, they are usually more of a trench or oblong shape, so maybe they are the structure thats missing!! (Probably wrong, but a try!!)

The arrow marked #14 should be pointing to the southeastern tower in the castle’s interior not to the wall. This large rectangular room covered is with a cross vault. This room’s vaulted basement, which was turned into a cistern for the concentration of rain water, was originally used as a prison.

Doh! Ignore my last post; it is a load of rubbish! :-( The arrow marked #14 should be pointing to the chamber at the top of the hill which at 2068 ft is the highest point of the castle and was used as a lookout post and to message Buffavento. It still has its beautiful window in the south wall

Just to clear up a couple of things. The southeastern tower in the castle’s interior is a large rectangular room covered with a cross vault. This room’s vaulted basement, which was turned into a cistern for the concentration of rain water, was originally used as a prison. To the southwest of this tower another vaulted room exists and to its south there is a range of three vaulted chambers with loopholes where the soldiers resided. The area shown on Hans map next to the three vaulted chambers should in fact show the rectangular room.

Dear all, I'm back from an incredible nice meal at Guido's - can you buy a 3-course meal for 8,5 English Pounds in the UK: "yes/no?" or in Holland "yes/no?": my answer: certainly not in Holland? OK, back to business. Is it acceptable English to write that all answers after my post # 19 are bull? Or should I write b*ll? P.S. Bill, you couldn't find the Tower of London if I guided you to the center, so Kantara is not in your league at all...

OK, last gasp! #14 should be pointing to the right to the medieval latrine which is the tiny triangular section next to the building marked #13

RE msg 27, darrener2: Smart! I thought that nobody would look today - but you did! I obviously have put the web page with the solution back on line a bit too early... OK, my error. The error on the plan of Kantara castle (issued by the TRNC government) is shown here: http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/Kantara_plan_Quiz_ab_final.jpg . The arrow pointing at nr. 14 should start in the medieval latrine next to nr. 13 (barracks for the garrison). And this is how the medieval latrine looks (it has not been used lately, i.e. in the past 500 years or so... ): http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/Kantara_medieval_latrine.jpg People did what they had to do at the end (right) of this little room, "it" fell down the steep side and then one would walk away. Easy...

Goodness me DC, you make it sound as though I am cheating. ;-) In actual fact, yours is not the only website to feature a detailed plan of the castle. Using another (unmarked) plan and a very good description of the castle from elsewhere I worked it out all by myself.

Of course you won. There was nothing in the rules to say you couldn't do any research and had to rely on memory. Unless the rules were changed after the result.

Good morning all! I start this new day in a new week with (a heavy cold) and an apology (re msg 29, darrener2): I had no intention to accuse you of cheating! I fully admit that I should have been more careful writing my message 28. Of course you are the winner of this Quiz-ab and your price is a CD with the only remaining medieval music from Cyprus ("The Island of St Hilarion", composed between 1413-1422). Do you live in TRNC or in the UK? Let me know via email so I can arrange to hand you the CD (on the Saturday Lambousa market, Lapta?) or I'll send the CD to the address you give me. OK? Darrener2, please mail to mcf.trnc@gmail.com

| Thank you very much DC. Unfortunately I shall not be visiting the TRNC in the forseeable future. So, I should be very grateful if you would deliver the CD to Liz at Guido's, with both our compliments and instructions for her to include it as a prize in the raffle for whichever charity event they are next hosting.
