The ones I want should still be clucking!

In my quest to think up ideas on becoming more self sufficient, hubby and I have decided we'd like to try our hand at keeping some chickens. I enjoy the odd egg for breakfast!

Does anyone know where I would be able to get a couple of chickens and a cockrel at a reasonable price?

Thanks.

Pippie,

If you are looking for a cockerel, I have one you can have for free! About 8 months old and as randy as they come - the perfect partner for your hens. You will need between four and ten hens by the way and only one cockerel or they will fight each other (the cockerels that is), don' get hens more than three years old unless you have a pressure cooker and do not name them - that makes it personal when it is time to sharpen the axe!

If you have never kept chickens before then you are in for a surprise! Find a source for wood shavings/saw dust before you get them and think hard about where you are going to site them. If you let them roam the garden then expect them to eat everything in it and dig big pits for their sand baths.

Chicken feed is 20TL for 25Kgs but they will eat almost anything. Google "Chickens" and just see how popular these funny critters are - would not be without ours!

Kambylikid,

Where are you getting feed at for 16.5TL a Kilo? That would be a saving of 7TL a month for me - not to be clucked at over the years!!!

Course if I have to drive far to pick it up then with a Pajero doing 35 K's to 5 litres and desiel costing 1.7 a litre It would have to be within 8 k's of here or I would start to make a loss - hmmmm

Thanks everyone. I haven't kept chickens before so you're right Waddo - it's all a bit of a surprise, especially now I've started reading all about keeping chicks etc.! I might just be in touch about the cock - think I need to sort myself out with the chickens first and make sure I know what I'm doing!

Nglbarnes - you're right, a brilliant site, I've just finished reading it - good fun too. I'll be looking in on that for tips I'm sure.

Kambylikid, I'll give you a ring - would like to call round if only to pick your brains!
