Hi ian welcome to the forum, Im sure you didnt join up for a easy life, the way i see it is the more crossing openings the brighter the future, can i ask you why you think it would be harder.

I can think of a lot worse places for UN soldiers to be, but yes I'm sure it will spread you more thinly. Good news for the island though.

Back to the original question. I have not used all of the crossings, but have used a few. The only thing I have seen the UN do, is sit and drink coffee with the officials on both sides.

I am sure they do an important job away from the crossings.

I suppose people would head for the nearest crossing point to where they live or stay but does anyone have a full list of where they are and some landmarks to make it easier to find.

They are nowhere near Larnaca. It's just that Larnaca is signed in Famagusta. Follow the signs and you get to Ay Nik.

Pergamos is easy to find from Gecitkele.

I can give directions to either if needed.

Hi Ian welcome,

I served on 2 occasions with the UN in Cyprus, 66 and 73/74 the job then was difficult but interesting, I seen what I seen and formed my own opinion. I am reluctant to share those opinions if past posts are anything to go by.

It is understandably a very immotive subject. But I have to say I loved every minute of both tours, the memories never left and as a result I came to live in the TRNC two and a half years ago.

Job harder? do me a favour!!! tell that to the marines !!!! or better still to the lads and lassies in Afghanistan.

Enjoy your tour it's a doddle compared to other postings.

Gottheeyips,

Sorry you are reluctant to share your experiences, but I can see why! Would have been interesting for someone to relate first hand experiences.

Bradus,

it is tempting, but I have thrown in the odd snippet over the last 12 months those snippets got zero reaction,

however I suggest you ask ptepike who must have been Minus 5 to 20 years old during the troubled period, he seems to have all the answers on the current Cyprus problem, his reading is obviously extensive, but my old Dad use to say don't believe all you read!!.

Not interested in an argument to anyone that might react!!

I am also from a military background and both my dad and my husband did a tour of Cyprus - my husband's tour was 8 months just at the end of the troubles, I know he certainly enjoyed his time there. I have now bought in TRNC and remember his telling me certain things about certain areas and it is lovely to now understand a little bit about what he told me. I agree there are far worse places to be posted. Good luck to all our guys wherever they may be.

gottheyips,

I was with UNFICYP a little more recently than you. Perhaps some of us got mud on their boots as well as doing the reading. And as well as not abusing neutrality. ;)

I apologise if any of my postings have caused upset. I do not normally comment on spelling grammar etc. Like most, I believe that as long as the meaning is clear the rest is a bonus.

Having said that, I also believe that if a post is VERY poorly written it is less likely to be taken seriously.

My first post on this thread was in response to an earlier posting suggesting that unsoldier may have been drunk when he posted. Unless there was an implication that he was actually drunk, it seemed like a clear dig at a first time poster for poor use of English.

I found the poor use of English by the "attacker" a little ironic to say the least.
