There's a chain of restaurants in Melbourne, Oz doing free soup kitchen Asian style food which is free though a donation box is expected to be filled with $ at whatever the client/customer thinks it was worth. Richard

I'm working on something along the lines of an entrance fee and all you can eat for free. Drinks would be priced at reasonable prices. I'm sure there's a market for this type of restaurant.

I'm thinking along the lines of a self service buffet type restaurant, with a comedian and then live music for people who want to dance (if you can after filling your boots with food) There will be an entry fee and food will only be available for around 2-3 hours. can anyone add anything that they think would work?

The problem with free after an entrance fee, peoples eyes are bigger than their belly and plates are over loaded with food which is not consumed hence, huge waste. Better free with discretion of payment from customer afterwards. Richard

The only place I knew for free food was the Hare Krishna lot in Perth, Western Australia. I couldn't be bothered to join the queue as I would have faded away by the time I got to the door. But I don't think that is what is on offer here? But how do you make your money? Drinks? In which cas eyou wouldn't want me through the door, cos I am a water girl! But with right organisation, I reckon it could work - but, WHAT will you be offering. Endless crisps and peanuts? Bangersw and mash? or a real meze?

Not really FREE is it, if you have to pay an entrance fee, or extra if you leave anything on your plate. I prefer to pay for my food without having to pay to get into a restaurant in the first place. So it's, thanks but no thanks from me :-(

Doyan 1 great idea BUT you have obviously never run a restaurant and particularly a restaurant in the TRNC, this concept works, has done in Australia and in London in the 80's but the fact remains that its about bums on seats, numbers of people in a specific area, the costs of this business are still high here, (very high in the TRNC) and the sums wont add up, please feel free to call me and i can meet up for a drink and give you some advice and will play the devils advocate of course, but will maybe be able to give you a few home thruths about the restaurant business and the financial and physical logistics involved. sorry to be negative nicks kid brother on this, but I really do have 25 years of experiance of success and failures in this business in London, Oxford, Cambridge, Antibe and Kyrenia. Saying all that, things may well be very different when the flood gates open and this place becomes, ' a place to be' and there are enough people around.

Bill Its a novel idea but given the amount of bars opening and closing you might have some competition!!! Although the amount of Brits who would go to the opening of a packet of crisps in the TRNC just to get a free crumb off the table it will certainly be a busy place. Cant see it making much money though given the amount of people with short arms and long pockets. Whats the bet that if you get this open someone will call and ask if you do delivery ;-)

msg 33: Liz, in msg 6, bill says he is thinking of charging an entrance fee. 5-30 to 8-00pm Mon to Fri Ezic, 14tl eat as much as you like, Tues 7-00 to 9-00pm Ezic Supreme, 30tl eat as much as you like. Never been to the Ezic one, but been to Ezic Supreme a couple of times, though not lately. Jimmy French was maitre D last time and drinks were also free. May use buffets now, but we certainly had our own table and chairs. Tony

Hi Liz, they kept changing the goal posts. Started off with all you could eat AND drink. Then dropped the free drink. Business slumped so had free LOCAL drinks. Then free SOFT drinks. Not sure what drinks you get now. Jimmy was still there just over two years ago, I know he isn't now, I sold him the Jeep he keeps bumping into things in. Think he's at Zekis now, but mebbe not, I've been wrong before, though not lately lol. Tony

I think it's a brilliant idea. Call it Weight Watchers. 'How little can you eat?' could be the catch phrase. Then over eating shouldn't be a problem. How about weighing people as they come in and then when they leave? Have to charge a fee for using the loo of course.

I used to eat at an Asian buffet in Birmingham that had an entrance fee, 7.50 pounds at the time. They gave you a plate and fork/spoon and you just helped yourself to dozens of different starters, curries, rice, puddings, etc. No alcohol and soft drinks were reasonable. Very few staff and obviously made a profit as I went there for years. The killer overhead here would be rent because as soon as your landlord saw you making a profit he'd up the rent 'till you quit.
