New series of history quizzes (I tried to make them more difficult than the former series...).

Rules as usual (I make them on the fly if necessary...).

First and only prize for the winner of the next five quizzes: a CD with medieval music from Cyprus ("The Island of St Hilarion").

This coin is from my (medieval) collection and is very rare and thin. They're always in this condition, this one is even regarded as quite good for the type!

The question: When was this coin struck and for whom..?

Good luck! Hints may follow later...

Richard I as king of England (1189-99), denier of Poitou

Richard I's coins of Poitou are the only coinage in the name of Richard as king, as his English coins carry the name of his father Henry II.

No right answers in full yet... But, all who - above this message - wrote Richard or Richard I (not yet known as 'the Lionheart' or 'the Lionhearted' at the time!) get 1/4 point...

RE msg 7 & 8, Hatty: Coin: more about it when the Quiz is over, OK? Richard (Coeur de Lion): when this coin was struck (or should I call it minted?) Richard was not yet known by his nickname "Cœur de Lion". 2.15 pm: out for a beer now!

Sorry, came to this quiz late.

It is the reverse side of a silver Denier, struck/minted for Richard and it bears the word Aquitaine and a cross around the outside. Richard was given the Duchy of Aquitaine by his father Henry II at the request of his Mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine.

The coin was probably struck/minted around or just after 1172 when he was formally recognised as Duke of Aquitaine.

The coin was issued in the Duchy of Aquitaine so I suppose the date would be between 1172 and 1189 when he was Duke before he succeeded to the English throne.

Answer to the Quiz-ac: It's an Anglo-Gallic coin (Obole) from the time of Richard, later known as King Richard I "the Lionhearted" (1189-199). He was Duke of Aquitaine between 1172-1185. In 1185 Richard was forced by his father (Henry II) to return Aquitaine to Eleanor, his mother (the only woman in history who married a French King, Louis, and later an English King, Henry). It's easy to Google all about Richard's real wild years as the second son of King Henry II - no use to copy/paste it all here.

The next QUIZ-(ad) is about a coin also (unless participants find the subject boring?), so more details will be given later.

The score: Darrener2: 1/2 pt, No1Doyen: 1/4 pt, Hatty: 1/4 pt.
