Just been perusing the 1936 handbook for mental nurses and this is what it says under 'Collapse from Drink'



Treatment,

Try to rouse the patient. An emetic of mustard and water may be administered, As the doctor will probably think it necessary to wash out the stomach, prepare for this. Apply hot bottles, and administer coffee by the 'Rectum'.



Well what can one say that's the way they did things then, makes you glad you weren't around then doesn't it.

p.s. They don't state whether the coffee should be hot, cold, with or without milk and sugar.!!

Nurse Awful, I have just finished reading a very disturbing article on the dangers of drinking, it was scary, I swear I will never read again.

That is the title of the book!



Really interesting it talks about the 'Lunacy Law' of 1890, calls people 'Cretins' and 'Mongols' says people with mis shapen jaws and noses are more likely to be lunatics. They used to treat patients with Strychnine to name just one poison.



This is a book that mental health Nurses were supplied with then.



Thank goodness the world has moved on from then!

How much Strychinine is too much...isn't this a main component in LSD? (Lysergic Acid Diethylamide)

I have to say, that in light of treatment in the 'middle' ages a dose of strychnine might actually be more favourable than a dose of Electrc Shocks delivered to the brain.....(a much favored treatment back then)...how glad am i that this doesn't (supposedly) happen anymore!....shiver.....

Electric shock treatment was still being used mid 80's and very occasionally early 90's.

My mate had the coffee treatment,the Doctor jammed a funnel up his freckle and started pouring the coffee in,my mate started screaming blue murder,Doctor says "Sorry is it a bit hot?"

My mate says "No,there's no bloody sugar"
