Monday at 4p.m. at the Pia Bella, and under the auspices of the BRS. ALL ex pats are invited to a Question and Answer session/reception with the Prime minister, Eroglu. It is said that refreshments will be provided, and there are those who are fearful that this could be a 'rabble rousing' session. However, I am sure the BRS will control the event with true British dignity! It is stressed that this for ALL ex pats and not just BRS members.

Secret Police 'in house' so any dodgy question asked you'll be on the next banana boat out! Went last year and asked him why expatriates who live here cannot vote and replied, via a translator, we could and very quickly disappeared off the platform and then I was asked, after the interior minister tried to give me some bullshit excuse who didn't even know the constitutions (there's two of them), to leave. I was sober! Richard

thanks for that comment, as only today I had a request on this very subject, as to whether it had been broached here and what response. So, come on, ask again, and then I can send two lots of info to interested parties in U.K. There is someone out there who is on your side, Richard (and so am I for what it is worth). Anyone else who knows anything about voting for ex pats - what has been asked and what has been said, and who they asked and who said what to whom. I would happily compile answers and send them to interested parties.

In Birmingham there are 2 MP's not EU Mp's but proper MP's who were born outside the UK Gisler Stewart German and an Asian Mp born in Kashmir sorry his name escapes me One question every one would like answered is with the new title deeds law under discussion can they make it retrospective so that everyone who has signed up and paid gets their kocan Also a good money maker for the government would be an official office where you can "shop or dib in" the builder and developer who wants the purchaser to pay their Capital Gains Tax Benefits would be more revenue for the government happier owners both expat and Turks of Cyprus y

On a personal level I have a VAT problem, but I wouldn't ask Eroglu in public\! But what someone in London genuinely wants to know is how many ex pats would LIKE to v ote, and why, and secondly has the government been asked this before and by whom and when. Obvviously, Brinsley has, but has anyone else. It will be interesting to see how much time there is on Monday to ask Questions, and/or to get full replies. The curious, such as I am, will go and see.

I think everyone who owns and lives in a property here should be allowed a vote.

How do they justify the refusal of PTP for being on pre 74 Turkish land or near an army base when it is both racial discrimination and a nonsense?

if 10,000 expats had votes I doubt that we would be ignored so readily. With the two major parties so close to each other we could be the difference to whether a party wins or loses.

As someone who does have a vote i find it very hard to decide who to give my vote to because of the language problem. I am more fortunate then most of you as i have a Turkish husband but what is the point of having a vote if you dont understand the language.

I think some of us Teresa should get stuck in and learn the lingo. I have been cok tembel, but I can never find the time to sit and learn. As you have a Turkish husband you have a head's start. So, what can we do about it? But maybe for you to vote, speak swith as many locals as speak English to find out what each person is offering, and what way forward they suggest, and then decide for yourself what you think is best for north Cyprus and its peoples!

Marion i do speak with lots of english speaking locals and ask their opinions only problem with that is you tend to be told what they want you to hear. I suppose it is like the new young voters in the UK they are swayed by their parents views because growing up they dont take that much notice of politics but to have a firm opinion you need to know the past few goverments to get a good idea. As for speaking the language i have been trying to learn for the past 15 years and have learnt more in the past year by dealing with the locals face to face.

i HEAR WHAT you are saying Teresa. People often say what they think you want to hear cos they don't want a 'discussion'. In one sense I don't envy you in making a decision. I would love to vote, but think I would have to think about it more than I already do before making a right decision. Not a decision that would affecft me the way I wanted, but what I thought was best for the country itself. And well done on improving your Turkish. Maybe I should come and work with you in the shop!!!! Good luck with making your decision.

Ah don't you know that grey hair makes men distinguished - but it makes women look old! So maybe the candidate feels Grecian 2000 would lessen visual confidence?

Someone should ask Eroglu if he's prepared to confront and tackle the nepotism, which is so blatantly rife and is the underlying factor in all TRNC's problems beleaguering any 'overhaul' of the legal, banking and PTP application systems, and is primarily responsible for allowing all the malpractices within the construction and real estate industry. Try that one, Richard! On the other hand, probably best not; as one might be in for a very nasty shock come the next visa application visit!

And of course, as I have posted elsewhere, you can meet Talat onFriday night at Ozankoy Sports Club. Oh and that wil be bi-lingual! |

I may be wrong but I understood that all questions will have to be submitted to and be vetted by the BRS first and will be submitted as a list to Eroglu as opposed to having an open forum. AJ

Now where did you get THAT idea AlsancakJack? Have you been overhearing any conversations. What if I said you COULD be correct, but that it could well be that it is to do with Eroglu's request! And that it could well be that it is merely a collection of all the questions that everyone has been asking for a long time. And it could well be that there will be time after for questions. But who am I to know, - one can sometimes guess things, but obviously you know things. So, do tell!

Msg 18/ AJ: That's what Cyprus Today said, didn't it? I reckon it's time to shelve the PC and get down to the 'nitty-gritty' straight off with these blockheads! Brinsley's probably right when he mentions 'Secret Police' presence, though. But, how can any foreigner get through the message, for their own good, if only they could see it, without 'compromising' their (temporary) residency. Being declared 'Persona Non Grata' at immigration time is more than a bit of a concern - especially if, as in 'Little Britain', the computer says 'No'!

Agree Tenakoutou. You might like to know that I was talking to someone who is a great supporter of Talat and who is a 'friend' of mine, and was asking about the voting question (and I agree with Mal on this one), but I was told as I have been told before "If we allow the Brits to vote, then we will have to allow the Turks to vote, and we don't want that." Personally I can't see the logic of that, and I am sure there would be ways round it, such as 'British homeowners who have no other home, or British people who live here but don't work, or ....... But to want to exclude the Turks who come here to make money when it was the Turks who were nvited here to help build the place up, many of whom are now citizens, and whose country bankrolls this - well, it is a mystery. Can anyone else explain?

MarieB If you look at the history of Cyprus you will know that mainland Turks have been encouraged to move to Cyprus from at least 1571. If you have not read the book 'The Turks in Cyprus 1571 to 1878' by Ahmet C Gazioglu then I suggest you add that to your library. AJ

Thanks AJ - not sure I have read that book. Will look for it, but do know the gist of the Ottoman period, starting with the 1571 take over. I don't have any problem in one sense in their being here, they were invited by Denktash, I believe for very good reasons, but I do not see why suddenly their vote is not wanted and nor is ours. I also heard that one of the reasons that citizenship for Brits is frozen is because of the need to keep new Turkish citizens from outnumbering the TC's. Bu tmaybe that is only a story.
