With the recession and the cost of holidaying in destinations that are within the 'eurozone', the TRNC will never have a better opportunity to bolster tourist numbers. Apologies for the cynicism, but I am willing to bet a few beers that they 'miss the boat'. !!

To give an indication, I have been down to Alagadi beach over the past couple of weeks and whilst there are a decent number of tourists about, many of those that I have spoken to have been disappointed by the state of the 'unspoilt' beach and the general unkempt state of the place. A concentrated 'clean up' would do wonders in attracting repeat visitors but seems beyond the capabilities of local and national government. What a pity !!

Twenty years ago when we first visited TRNC we were sure we had made a major mistake. The drive from Ercan to Alsancak was like driving through a rubbish dump/building site. Two years ago I picked up friends from Ercan, they had never visited TRNC before, their reaction was "There is a lot of rubbish by the side of the roads and most of the buildings look unfinished". Nothing really changes!

Theres a question for Eroglu then,is he prepared to bring the vat back down and spend some of the money on cleaning the place up.Seems like a winner to me.A sprat to catch a mackerel,so to speak,

There is every year an organised clean up of Aligadi with divers clearing the waters too but I always feel it done too late, perhaps it should be done end of march before the easter hols start, just a thought

Marcosthechef, they wait until May because then the weather has seattled, there is no point doing it before as we alway get at least one big storm in April which washes a lot of rubbish from the Med on to the beaches. Its hard enough trying to get people to help once not sure they would be able to get people twice in just over a month.

no way !

thanks to CTA ..I wouldnt think that any tourists at Ercan airport yesterday would ever make a return trip !

it was chaotic ! and no one was willing to tell the holiday makers what was going to happen ,we live here and were just making a trip to Turkey so wasnt as bad for us ..but very frustrating !

Alagadi is supposed to be one of the TRNC's main tourist attractions, to only clean it once at the beginning of the season is nothing short of criminal. Anybody who goes there on a regular basis can testify to the disgraceful amount of rubbish that is left on the beach and surrounding areas. Unfortunately, the majority of this is done by locals who just don't seem to give a damn about their environment. I understand that education programmes are underway in schools but it is the adults who are the main culprits - they just don't seem to get it !!!

There are supposed to be 40000 troops here who seem to do little else but 'guard' little bits of wasteland - maybe they could be given gainful employment by helping to clean up the place.

Just a thought.

Get them out of Lefkosa gaol, into chain gangs, and set them on to clean up 'Polythene Island' - pronto!

fiendishpaul.

I think getting the troops to tidyup would only encourage people to dump even more rubbish .Somethings are unalterable and have to be accepted.

Maybe if tour operators were sued in UK under trade descriptions act for misrepresenting ones holiday as being in an 'unspoilt' area ,someone might take heed.
