How about writing a copy of this template to e mail: fwestphal@icrc.org in an effort to get North Cyprus Red Crescent accepted while the South is now being considered. Your help could make all the difference.

Dear Sir -- Madam

The North Cyprus Turkish Red Crescent has repeatedly made applications

to be recognized by International Committee of the Red Cross since

1976 however the procedures concerning our applications have not been

adopted. Additionally the ICRC informed us neither about the current

situation of our application nor a person or a department to get in

contact with.

Nevertheless I have been informed that the application of the South

Cyprus Red Cross has been taken into consideration thus will be

discussed by the Joint Statutes Commission. Under these circumstances

it is clearly an unfair and a discriminatory behavior that the North

Cyprus Red Crescent's application is taken into consideration.

continues:

Unfortunately I must inform you the International Committee gives an

impression that it takes side with the South Cyprus Red Cross in its

assessment of the so- called application and its tolerating attitude

on disregard of our righmpression that it takes side with the South Cyprus Red Cross in its

assessment of the so- called application and its tolerating attitude

on disregard of our right to receive aid is a political manner. Therefore I regret to say that the International Movement comes to a state

of a political organization.

Kind Regards

Shouldn't Taner Erginel be dealing with this matter? At least he has a legal brain on him!

I think the idea, Richard, is that everyone puts their oar in.

One interesting piece of information I have received, which I think shows even more that public pressure could be important is that (according to my source) the charter of the organisation forbids more than one society in a country. Therefore ' there can be only one Red Cross/Red Creesceitn inCyprus and it is a rule that applies internationally."

My own opinion, and I told my source that, is that in view of the fact that the north applied in 1976, it would not be helpful to allow the south in now that it is being discussed. That would be another slap in the face for the north and at the time of negotiations, quite out of order.

But that is just my opinion - what do the rest of you think, and are you prepared to write?

Just wondering how many people feel it is worth writing. Whatever my own personal views or anyone else' for that matter, I think it grossly unfair if the southern application is accepted and the north is still out in the cold - no matter what the law may say. We all know that 'the law is a ass'! Even if it changes nothing, writing shows that some of us are concerned.

Certainly if the Red Crescent in Northern Cyprus applied so long ago, they should get "first refusal" - it seems a silly rule, as in a 2 religion community (if we ever become one community) surely both could be tolerated?
