I would remove Kaka and replace him with Pele, difficult choices but I think yours is pretty good. Best for me was the number one! Playing at a time when pitches were rubbish, he still kept his balance and coupled with with incredible technique made him a genius.

De Stefano was way better than all bar the cheating Argie who I have to say albeit begrudgingly was the best player ever to grace a footy pitch

best goalkeeper Gordon Banks, best defender Bobby Moore, best midfielder Johan Cryuff best attacker Pele. i have limited it to players i have seen play and feel it is unfair to compare players in different positions.

Dear Eastend Joker,

Glad to see that footballers other than strikers also ring your bell. Best seen in my lifetime. Goalkeeper Gordon Banks, Defender Bobby Moore, (both nominated by Pele and he must be entitled to a view!). Best attacker Pele. Most complete and talented footballer anywhere on a pitch with no limitations on all aspects of footballing skills, Georgie Best. Surprised that nobody mentions Jimmy Greaves, in my view the most lethal striker in the penalty area ever. Bobby Charlton scored 49 goals in 106 internationals. Jimmy Greaves 44 in just 57 internationals. Equally prolific for Chelsea, Spurs, and in European football. It was not until slo mo cameras arrived that anybody could see how he managed to flash half chances past goalkeepers with such stunning regularity. We love them all don't we !

Jimmy Greaves was indeed a lethal striker who missed out on the 1966 world cup to be replaced by Geoff Hurst who, ironically scored a hat trick.Anyone remember a winger called Tony Currie who played for Sheff United.Maybe not world class but a hell of a dribbler,

Paul.

Dear Newlad,

That revives fond memories, "Tony Currie". He also reminded me of the earlier Don Rogers who was an equally tricky and very pacey England Winger. Did not get the exposure he deserved. I think it was Swindon he played for who were I believe a third division side. There exists somewhere black and white film of him almost single handedly destroying Arsenal at Wembly with a an astonishing cameo performance of ball skills in what was "pissing down rainfall".

Pele has to be the greatest player ever,he won the world cup at 16,he played in 4 world cups and scored over 1000 goals in top class football,he did things with a football other players couldn't even think of,he was miles ahead of anybody,I was fortunate to see him on a number of occasions. The other players mentioned were the best in the world for very short periods of time but the greatest ever it must be Pele.

There are so many great footballers that it's difficult to restrict to just 5. I would create two lists with UK greats & world greats :-

UK world

John Charles Pele

George Best Maradona

Jimmy Greaves Cruyf

Bobby Moore Messi

Kenny Dalglish Beckanbauer

Max...

NEWLAD, Tony Currie was one of the best midfielders of his generation. Certainly those running the great Leeds United side of the late 60's, early 70's, thought he was good enough to replace the legendary Billy Bremner. If he'd been surrounded by the players that Billy was, well, what can one say....

Dear No 1 Doyen. Take your word for this but I may know the most "unlikely". Bobby Gould could not get starts at Highbury but, when defeat seemed inevitable, on he would burst from the tunnel snorting and stamping like a Spanish fighting bull who had been speared in the arse with a rosette, to the roars of the Arsenal faithful. He could not trap a bag of wet cement and chased balls which had already gone out of play. Amazingly, he could oft times get a consolation goal usually by wrong footing the goalkeeper with a shot off his shins or similar. The crowd always loved it and cheered for more. The opposition always seemed bemused. He tripped his way between 11 clubs and even 11 more clubs as a manager and football pundit though I could never make sense of word he said. To quote Jimmy Greaves, "football is a funny ol' game" !

It has to be Glen Hoddle for me -even though I'm not a Spurs fan.

I remember watching him play for Swindon against Birmingham in the eighties.(he was player manager)

In the first half he played in a sweeper position and Blues ran riot - 4-1 up at half time.

In the second half Hoddle went into midfield and completley distroyed Birmingham and Swindon won 6-4.

Hoddle created most of the Swindon goals!!

I will ever forget that game or his performance-he was outstanding.

Happy memories.

In the early 60's, the Brazil manager said "Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pele, is the best footballer the world has ever seen. If I play him in goal, he will be the best goalkeeper in the world, in defence, the best defender, on either wing, the best winger, as a forward, the best forward" I agreed with him at the ime but changed my mind when the word he most used, best, came on the scene. I never saw Pele live, but I saw Best, Edwards, Law, Charlton. Georgie Best, for me, was the greatest player the world has ever seen. Read his autobiography, if you're a man and don't like to shed a tear in public, read it in bed, you won't put it down.
