"Was he ever alive" i think he must have been Mr moderator seeing as he has just died. Please show a little respect for the man that instigated a dramatic change in music in the mid seventies. The sex pistols put music on its head all those years ago,and i am really glad that i was around to be involved and witness those heady days.Music was in a rut in 1975 and then Mclaren burst on the scene with the pistols and completeley re -wrote the script.

Granted, some of the music that came from the punk era was absolute shite, but look on the positive side of things. It managed to get people of their arses and into bands and into recording studios. The independent record labels had an absolute field day and stuck two fingers up to the major record labels. The band that i played in at the time gigged around Britain on the strength of it and they where days that are still vivid as i write this.God bless Malc, and hats off to him.A.J.please engage your brain before you post such offensive comments

Yeh but it was not music.

It might have suited your particular mood at the time but it was just not music and how long did it last?

I post very infrequently but when I do I try to make sure what I post is very close to or being correct.

Was he a sane person?

I think not.

I was around for the punk era not my seen but you have to respect the man for how it changed the music of the 70's. A lot of good bands came from it for one The Jam. Paul Weller what a talent would they have got there if it was not for the radical change in the Music industry It also led to the early eighties music groups George Michael,Duran Duran, Roxette Styerophonics

You may not like him or what he did but please respect him in this hour.

No matter what you thought of Malcolm Mclaren he did influence the music industry in the UK and the USA.

If you google him the page is going mad with the number of entries being made on or about him.

I am with you on this one, he fashioned and shaped the short but fascinating punk era into the big scene that it became, changing popular music and kids attitudes stretching the imagination of designers and musicians giving them the kick up the jacksi they needed to get out of the rutt they were in at the time.

He took on the record companies and reversed the rip off (The Great Rock n Roll Swindle)

The best thing is he told them he would do it but they were so sure he couldn't (Big T*ts Accross America)

The Punk era paved the way for may of the current forms of modern music which are by and large much tamer now, he broke into the hip hop scene for a while and mainstream but interesting popular music too but never the less without the Punk era and the Genious of Malcolm McClaren the industry would still be stuck in the Pre Punk days of artists being ripped off by the majors and turning out the same commercial crapp..................Respect

Dont forget the influence he also had in The States when he became the manager of the New York Dolls. Not really my cup of tea it has to be said but they where just the embryo from which other bands evolved, such as Talking Heads and Iggy pop. Both of which i still play to day.I admit that the guy was barking, but so are many creative geniuses. If it hadnt have been for him ,and bands that included the Sex Pistols,The Ramones,The Buzzcocks,The Jam,The Stranglers. Then i wouldnt have spent the best 5 years of my life travelling the country banging my skins.

You are right, I should show some respect but I find it hard (and ironic) to show respect to someone that never showed any respect to anyone else.

I thought a lot of punk was really good, I still play double dutch, I believe that was Malcolm Mc Claren, really goes down well at gigs,

Did it become known as the skipping song, or was that another one?

How would you know that he never showed any respect to anyone else. That really is a very bold statement to make unless you knew the guy did you,

Thanks for the clarification, especially from Nurse Awful! Before my time!? More likely out of my sphere! Strictly classic me - front row Albert Hall, Festival Hall, Covent Garden and all that stuff. Punk was to me just wearing a safety pin through your nose - I think!

Buit as NA says 'before my time'.

But it is always sad when someone who made an impression has died. Whether one liked his music or not, I guess it sounds as if it helped a lot of people. Not many of us can die knowing that we affected a lot of people. We are lucky if we have had affect outside of our families.

May he rest in peace -whatever he was and did. He is now onto another stage of being! And probably way outside of the Punk World.

Fair play to you Newlad. Respect for a marketing genius of his time. He was hugely responsible for the punk rock era. He also had a major impact on fashion and inspired the likes of Vivian Westwood. I remember their shop in World's End Chelsea, the pinacle of Punk fashion at the time, which has had a huge effect of the way people dress today. Similarly in music, if you ask the likes of Bono, Noel Gallagher, Damon Albarn and so on, you will find that the Sex Pistols were a major inspiration to their music. RIP.

Oh come on...punk was raw...3 minute tracks that you either loved or hated...but couldn't ignore...It brought music to the masses, and encouraged people to pick up guitar or bang the drums and form a band. Much better than learning how to play the latest game on a play station....

It was two fingers up to the establishment at a time where it was not polite to do it.

This era cannot be mentioned without the name of Malcolm McLaren coming up - he started it - it was a fun time, and sparked into life several bands that have already been mentioned. RIP.

RE msg 8, AJ: (...) Yeh but it was not music. It might have suited your particular mood at the time but it was just not music and how long did it last? (...)

=> I agree 100%, AJ. Who will remember more than a couple of words from any 'song' (if so) when time goes by? In my opinion it was the start of the downfall of the UK and some other Western European countries that were influenced by contemporary decay. And what was the follow-up? 'Heavy metal' and what have you now? It's a lot of nothing and only showing the signs of the time.

Have been one of the top acts at the Marlborough Jazz & Blues Festival for years... they will probably be so again.
