Polish President Lech Kaczynski has been killed in a plane crash in Russia along with approx 134 other people. Russian TV broadcast the wreckage on fire in the forest live. It is thought the plane hit the treetops as it was coming in to land.

Very sad in the circumstances they were going to commemorate the Poles massacred by Stalin troops in WW2 at Katin forest when Poland was partitioned by Germany and Russia

Also the plane a Polish air force Russian 1960/70'S jet

Prime-minister Putin is heading the investigation into the crash

Er Lilli I think the Polish are having it worse... !

It was a Soviet made Tupolev 154 - owned and maintained by the POLISH.. that crashed... the latest 'gossip' is that the Polish President ordered the Pilot to try to land - overruling suggestions from ATC that they should 'abort' and land at an alternative location.

I've flown on these older generation 154's a 'few' times and always hope the Pilots want to see their families, again, as much as me ... They are pretty sturdy and fly in conditions that would often have our airports closed...
