Hi Can anyone explain the sewer system in the TRNC, looked at a Villa that would not be mains(if there is one). Anyway the builder said a septic tank would be installed. This has now turned into a 7 metre hole!!!!!!!!!! Cesspit comes to mind, so does lost children and animals. How do you keep the smell from escaping, and how come the walls don't collapse in this country, they would in the UK that is why we have setic tanks.

Gilken, where your large hole in the ground is a large round plastic septic tank will be put in, the buired up to a small hatch with mud, all waste will then end up in the septic tank, all you need to do is once a year, have it emptied by a vacuum truck.

Builder has confirmed that a onion will not be put in. He is simply going to put in a 7 metre hole and cover it. Do I believe him No, he won't dig hole that deep. He will be long gone before any problems bubble up!!! I live in Wales in the hills I have a septic tank, that is why I asked him, know a bit about UK septic tanks, we are in the throws of putting in a new one. I was at the site in N Cyprus when they were putting the boundary wall in on a property, thought it was a daft move considering the amount of space needed to dig out the hole and put in the drainage pipework with a digger.

Hi Ray Chris here, I think you will find that it was a two ton water tank that was at the side of your villa when we were all there.

If it's anything like ours (and most others here) you 'should' have a dual chamber concrete tank system. Solids/paper etc drops out in the first tank, liquids carry over to the second tank through about a 4" pipe, which should be about a 30ft deep 'hole in the ground' They should not be sealed as if you flush paper (as most of us in the civilised world do) you will need to bring in a 'gulley sucker' every 3 years or so to empty out the first tank. You will need to get about a 4" hose in the first tank to empty it. Don't worry about smells, you should get very little, as the bacteria in the system actually prevents smells (though there will be some). You also need to check the pipework to the septic tank. Most builders here, when the pipe has to turn a corner, build a small concrete box, with pipe in and pipe out, this is effectively a mini septic tank, lift your drain lids and take a look. To solve this you need to first flush out and get rid of most of the liquid, fill with gravel to about 4" below the pipe in/out, cut a piece of 4" pipe in half and angle the ends to fit in the box, then cement in place, then you will have a nice continuus flow path to the real drain area. Incidentally, and worth remembering, the septic tanks here are only about 30ft deep, the water wells from which many poeple have potable water delivered are 90ft plus, so the sewage can in theory seep down to the water table, though it will require a very large volume over time to do this.
