Are they an insult to the very nature of marriage, which should be about creating a loving and lasting partnership and family?



Or is it pure romanticism to claim that marriages must be love matches?





Furthermore do arranged marriages have lower levels of abuse and marital violence?

I remember reading some while ago (I read a lot) that in some cultures arranged marriages work very well; in some cases probably better than so called 'love matches'.



I think, though, these days, it's often a problem of "East is East, etc. etc. and never the twain shall meet, where children/young people of particular cultures, are born and raised in "The West" but are expected to abide by the rules and traditions of the family, which, in many cases, are steeped in Eastern tradition. So, the kids have a westernised upbringing but are still expected to stick to the traditions of their forefathers.



You hear some terrible stories of "honour killings", which, to many of us are (quite rightly, in my opinion), barbaric.

There's an enormous variation as to how these things are done. Some get the chance to choose or say

"no" and others don't even get a look at the chosen before they are married. Mostly people in the West

end up marrying someone of the same social class, religion etc.

My Indian in-laws marriage was arranged when she was 13 and he 19 - "We were like dolls" he told me.

Their marriage lasted "Til death...
