Just in case anyone is hoping to travel, please note most airports closed due to volcanic ash floating over the UK from Iceland. As far as I am aware, only Gatwick is operating normally.

The latest on the news is that from 12.00 today all flights in and out of ALL UK airports are cancelled, they are going to review it again at 6pm tonight for the Airports in the South.

Dawnie if they re-open at 6pm you should be ok. It may be worth trying to ring London for a definate answer.

Dawn I tried to call you back is it still 4913? (or get me over the Skype link from our flightholiday site)

I am waiting for an email from CTA in the UK and might be able to assist further then.

I will update the flights 2009 / 2010 thread as I have details as I have already done for Pegasus passengers.

BBC Radio 4 have just reported that the dust cloud has become static in the atmosphere and it might not be until Saturday when airplanes are allowed to fly.

The news I'm getting is that it's highly unlikely the 6 o'clock deadline will be lifted. Hope CTA put you up in a hotel or at least dish out free food & drink vouchers for any considerable delay!

Belgian Airspace now closed and the cloud has got as far as Scandinavia and Finland.

The Volcano is still erupting and last time it erupted about 200 years ago, it went on for nearly 2 weeks.

Latest reports looking highly unlikely any UK airport will be open for at least 24 hours.

Unless there's a change in wind direction,.........

Well Richard, its 2.45am, not pm, due to land at Stansted at 6.30am tomorrow, so who knows if it will go ahead. I can see myself stuck at Ercan, at least at the moment, I am at home, albeit with an empty fridge etc etc

Latest on Daily Mail update is ALL UK airports closed until at least 6am (UK time) friday. It all seems to depend on more eruptions and wind direction. Fingers crossed for all of you who have flights booked that conditions improve.

Richard you tried to contact CTA!!!!!!!! I can only hope that I get another phone call telling me this flight is now not going ahead. Trouble is if I say, I will wait it out, the cost of a one way ticket will be horrendous in afew days time, so I have to hope that CTA ring me.

No I agree with you, but what I am hoping is that CTA ring me before I get to the airport for the supposed 2.45am flight. It will save me &my neighbours a journey & I can sleep in my own bed.

The problem you have, without any communication from CTA (even though they have contacted you previously) you'll lose any form of compensation if you 'no show' at the appointed time.

Yes Richard I know, thats why I am hoping they will ring & save me going to the airport at all, otherwise I have to go & see what happening.

looks like I am staying in Cyprus for a while & whilst normally thats not too much of a problem, hubby is in UK & its my birthday & wedding anniversary tomorrow (1st), so really wanted to get home. Hey ho.

Just had friends on a Monarch flight to Luton stranded in Larnaka. There website was not giving any info and still showed there flight as running to schedule(very bad) Has anyone got a car that they want driving to the uk or any advice. Cant seem to put in a one way flight in on the internet sites for flights it will only accept two way . Can anyone recommend any websites for flights were i can tap in a one way ticket.

However the news is not looking good.

Spent all day travelling to and from Luton Airport, was due to fly today, but No flights from there at all. I was given a help line number from Monarch airlines to arrange an alternative date of travel to Larnaca or refund, and have been phoning it all day, but can't get through. Re booked for next week with Pegasus to Ercan.

Fingers crossed, the dust cloud will have moved in the opposite direction!

Due to travel tomorrow with Pegasus - departing Stanstead 12.50 to go to Ercan. Nothing on Pegasus website about disruption of flights. Does anyone know the best way to make contact with Pegasus to get update...?

Watching news right now, not a lot of hope for you with the meteorological office saying the prevailing winds still in the direction to the UK from Iceland and further eruptions expected. You still must make contact with your carrier.

Richard, I eventually got through to them at 11pm, at first they told me to phone back again at midnight, I said no, it has taken me an hour to get to speak to anyone & I know the flight cant go ahead, so could someone please help me.

Eventually, they confirmed the flight was cancelled & I was to ring back again at 8.00am this morning. I dont think I am going anywhere today & not sure when I will leave.

Totally fed up but nothing can be done, at least this time its all airlines & not just CTA doing what they do best.

Still got the champers!!!!!!! lol

The last volcanic eruption beneath the glacier was on 20 March.

And I bet a lot longer. Why can't the airlines put the onus on themselves to contact all their passengers on updates rather than the other way round. 99% of the travelling public have mobiles, emails, landlines, fax's, etc!

Just spoken to CTA regarding a flight at 5.45 in the morning from Ercan to Manchester. They have said no flights going til 15.00 tomorrow at the earliest - not to go the airport and to ring tomorrow after 9.00 am. No one going anywhere at the mo.

I have no idea...but imagine that with all the disruption it is easier for us to phone them rather than them try to work out who is now on what flight. We have booked through an agent anyway so will contact them in the morning and ask them to monitor it for us. It's not a problem...I don't care who phones who to be honest, at least we have some communication from a very pleasant lady at CTA.

Hiya Dawnie, yes we can all have a good night's sleep. To be fair Ankara gave us the numbers for CTA and told us to ring to check, but at the time of speaking to them the update from CTA was to go to the airport, but of course things changed and times have shifted. Anyway, we now have a book on leaving times......30 lira to the winner.......which could well be me! Hope you are enjoying your few extra days in the sun....shame his lordship could not be with you. xx

What a shambles, £25 Taxi fare (one way) to the airport to be told to go home and return the following day to gain an update at even more cost!

Msg 61 - When I ask clients for phone numbers (not just UK but at destination) they often do not know them and sometimes give wrong ones!! Sometimes they do not want to be contacted and they are often the loudest complainers!

Msg 65 - On the desk involved they (all airlines) probably only have 2/3 lines and guess what they can't phone out becasuse someone else is calling in.

For more up-to-date information have a look at the flights 2009 / 2010 thread

(By the way I heard today that some customers were calling airlines slagging them and their staff off for what is not of their making this will not lead to good service levels. The current problem is "an act of God").

Tom

Point taken, if people don't want to help themselves by not giving out contact details so be it on them. As for yourself, working your business in addition to addressing questions to those that have not booked with you must be very time consuming and annoying. I'm just trying to update news information as it breaks through the media for those that are tied up in this volcanic mess using C44.

Do I get the job?!

My daughter's flight from Larnaca to Heathrow at 10.35 with Cyprus Airways is cancelled, at least we found out before going all the way to the airport. She's delighted! Cyprus Airways told us to phone back this evening but anyone any idea how we get her transferred on to another flight with them? Do we just have to wait for Cyprus Airways to offer us something? She can stay out for another few days but has an exam later in the week.

Richard I can see its not looking good, think I will go into CTA office this mornign & try & delay my flight back even further than Sunday, otherwise I am going to be in the same situation as Thursday by the looks of it.

Sue, just checked NATS website, your crew are going nowhere today as restrictions now until 7pm with another update this morning.

All Eurostar trains now fully booked so if anyone thinking they can fly to Paris and then on to UK it is a no no as Charles De-Gaulle airport now closed as well.

Well as I am not on a flight until Wednesday now, I will review it Tuesday & if no let up, will be back rebooking on the earliest flight rather than waiting for them to contact me as I know that the flights are being booked up by people rebooking & seats not available.

Anyone booked on Cyprus Airways, I recommend contacting the call centre rather than trying to go into the office. The call centre were able to rebook my daughter in seconds and send me an email confirmation. The woman in the office told us she might be able to get her on a flight next week but we would have to call back on Monday. The call centre number is 0035722365700.

The whole world airline industry is in such a mess it does not matter what restricted ticket you have, it will be honoured, at some stage! People running to offices, changing flights to another date which doesn't or will not happen are stupid, just wait until the air clears and travel commences then reorganise.

http://www.nats.co.uk/

The volcanic ash cloud from Iceland is moving around and changing shape. Based on the latest information from the Met Office, NATS advises that the restrictions currently in place across UK controlled airspace will remain in place until at least 0700 (UK time) tomorrow, Sunday 18 April.

There may be some airspace available within Scotland, Northern Ireland and England north of Leeds up till 1900 (UK time) today, which may enable some domestic flights to operate under individual coordination with ATC. We will be coordinating this closely with airlines and airports. We would repeat, it is most unlikely that many flights will operate today and anyone hoping to travel should contact their airline before travelling to the airport. After 1900 (UK time) today, Met Office forecasts show the ash cloud progressively covering the whole of the UK.

We will continue to monitor Met Office information and review our arrangements. We will advise further

@ 2100 BST.

Thanks Richard, i dont think I am stupid, I wanted to know that instead of waiting until tomorrow & be put onto the next available flight, that I pre empted that & rebooked. I know already that you cannot get on a flight until Thursday/ Friday next week, so by doing what I have done, I am on a wednesday flight if it goes ahead & not later in the week if I had waited until tomorrow to be rebooked.

It will depend on the airline carrier to decide whether they clear the backlog first or honour those that have a current ticket for that days travel.

If I had waited to reassigned a flight tomorrow, it would not be until probably friday as no seats available. because I have rebooked today, at least I have a seat on wednesdays flight if it goes ahead, so I will get home earlier. If not I have lost nothing & will be rebooked. I don't think any of us knows what they will do, but we can but try. CTA are accepting anyone who has had a flight cancelled to rebook, it saves them the work after all!!!! I still don't think I am stupid.

Air passenger rights

European legislation provides rights to passengers if flights into, within or out of the EU are delayed or cancelled. If you flew abroad with a non-European airline and you are outside Europe the legislation does not apply and you will need to check with your airline. Many countries will have their own laws in place which will provide similar levels of protection.

If your flight has been cancelled and you have not travelled to the airport, you will need to contact your airline. Your airline is obliged to either re-book you onto an alternative flight or to offer you a refund.

If you were already at the airport when your flight was cancelled, in addition to the above, you may also be entitled to meals and refreshments, along with two free telephone calls, e-mails, telexes or faxes and, if the delay is overnight, hotel accommodation and transport to and from the hotel. However, as the disruption is beyond the airlines' control there is no right to financial compensation.

Package Holidays

If you have booked a package holiday your tour operator will be responsible for protecting your holiday and providing you with a suitable alternative holiday or a full refund. You should contact your travel agent or tour operator to arrange this. If you are currently abroad please contact your local tour rep for more information. if you are due to travel in the next few days please contact your tour operator or travel agent for an update.

Other protections

You should check your travel insurance as some policies will cover you if a journey or holiday is cancelled owing to the flight problems. However, if you have booked flights and accommodation separately you could lose any money that you have spent on hotel accommodation. If you paid by credit card, you may be able to claim the cost of the flight from your credit card provider.

Kevan - Navek - Your last few messages are useful but I think Tom covered a lot in a simplistic manner on the thread Flights 2009 / 2010 Msg 134

Richard - Message 84 - Sometimes action is satisfying and makes you feel less impotent; like changing your tickets?

Dawnie1 - I don't think Richard thought you were silly and he is right it depends on the airlines own rules if they make a precedent of the passengers already booked for a flight.

It certainly saves all the hassle & cost of getting to the airport unnecessarily as has happened to friends & having to turn back. It saves on taxi fares & trying to get through to CTA, which has been a nightmare.

AJ lets hope it does not come to that!!!!!;-)))))))

At least this way I know I am on a flight on Wednesday if it goes ahead.

Does anyone know CTA rules anyway, they make it up as they go along.

Richard didnt think I was silly, he thought I was stupid!!!! )))))

Hi flightholiday,

Only hadn't read it as I have no plans for traveling in the near future

Was posting info to start with, as no one else at the time had.

Then numerous threads with similar info appeared.

Don't think anything will be moving this month :-(

as volcano still active, may be a week after the volcano stops before anything flys.

Also depends on wind directions.

On the news today, it was said

"the last time something like this happened, it lasted two years" :-(

I have family who are due to fly within the next 10 days, but I'm sure they will be staying put.

That's my opinion.

Check out the documentary/book " All four engines have failed" which documents the plight of the passengers and crew on a BA flight in the 80's flying over Java. Volcano erupted and debris caused all four engines to fail. I would rather stay put until aviation authorities were certain that there was no danger.

Hi Navek,

Informative as ever.

Many US/Canadian flights to Europe were delayed today due rerouting to avoid the ash cloud but generally they all got through ok.

The patience of the US carriers may be stretched if their home schedules or the connections for their passengers in Europe get too much out of sinc. So they may start canceling some services to ensure they keep aircraft where they need them most.
