We have hundreds of bees in the lavender, not just the flowers, on the leaves too. Is this normal? Are they extracting some kind of essence/oil from the leaves? If so, where do I find the honey they're making??? I'm dreading the fact that Frog must be about due to start spraying! (On the other hand, the mossies are already a problem, so you just can't win, can you?)

I guess it is natural - it must bee if itzzzzz happening, muzzzzzzzzn't it? Seriously though, following the wet winter we've had it's bound to boost the plantlife and insect life this year. Expect millions and zillions of mosquitoes and other stinging thingies, spiders, chicadas and all. I love creepie-crawlies so am really looking forward to the bounteous times ahead.

Lavender attracts bees but repels most other insects, including mossies and sandflies - good to grow close to your patio, or sitting area. Have you checked around your garden to see if there's a bee swarm?

Thanks Tenakoutou, yes we have looked around, that was our first thought too. We've got 6 enormous lavender plants along the terrace wall - I wish I could say they help with mossies and sandflies! Then again, maybe they do and it could be a lot worse! We're not worried by them at all, just wondering why they were on the leaves, as well as the flowers. Perhaps it was an orderly queue Wherever they're making their hive should be delicious pickings for someone.

One of the ingredients for the 'after bite balm' I make up includes lavender oil - sometimes Tea-Tree oil, too. Bees usually don't live too far away from their source of tucker - they don't like carrying their pollen load 'uphill'! If there is a swarm - it'll likely contain a Queen - stand a large garden pot on two thinish laths of wood in a shady place - you could well end up with your own hive - lavender honey, too!
