We have today received an email informing us that the government in their wisdom, will not be awarding an increase in our pensions this year. Sorry to spoil your day.

Morning Bridie, As NC Man said 'who emailed you that !' It would not surprise me as the lies this Government has told. Did the Chancellor in his pre Budget Speech promise a 2.5% increase in ALL disability Pensions! Well my War Pension (only awarded in conjunction with Disability) increased by only 1.25%. Am waiting till end of month to see what happens to my Service Pension as part of mine is also a disability and hope you are wrong and someone has played a trick on you!

You know what they say about damned lies and statistics ... According to my email, the part of the pension which normally gets a small hike (linked to the cost of living index) will remain as is this year, because the cost of living in the UK has fallen. Maybe someone got confused and measured the standard of living by mistake?

This information came from Major General Peter Bonnet, last secretary of the Armed Forces Pension Socety. I do have connections. As the cost of living index had fallen -1.4%, the Goverment didn't want to decrease the pension so left it as it was, hence no increase.

He is right and the message on their phone states the same thing. The pension is based on the retail price index in the month of Sept for the following years increase and as stated it was -1.4% so no rise in the basic military pension. Dont know about disability paensions etc.

My understanding was , as stated by Basil and Notthereyet, it's only the index linked aspect affected. Retail price index goes up we get a rise, goes down our pension stays the same.

Both Army and Police increase in pensions are linked to the RPI. As the RPI was negative at 30 September 2009 there will be no increase. The only consolation is that no matter how negative the RPI allegedly is, the pensions do not get reduced. This is my first year without an increase. Pity I cannot say the same about Diesel, Gas and Electric
