The governing National Unity Party’s candidate, Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu has said that the state of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus had crowned the struggle for existence waged by the Turks of Cyprus. Addressing a crowded election rally in Gazimagusa’s Namik Kemal Square yesterday, the UBP candidate said that they were seeking a solution where the two peoples in Cyprus can live side by side in peace and under Turkey’s effective guarantee.

Stating that he will work towards defending the rights of the TRNC people at the negotiating table if elected as President, Eroglu said that the people of the TRNC were happy to be able to exist under the roof its own state.

Speaking earlier during visits to villages in the Iskele District, Eroglu said that Sunday’s elections was important for the future of the TRNC.

Accusing his rival President Talat of giving away concessions at the negotiation table, the Premier said that Talat had demoted the Cyprus Turkish People to the level of a community by accepting the principles of single sovereignty and single citizenship.
