Eroglu ,as predicted has won the election for President, what will this mean for the The Repulic of Northern Cyprus. My personal opinion is that Turkey will have already prepared for this eventuality taking place and will have already briefed Talats conquereor. He, (Eroglu) will have been told, in know uncertain terms that he must tow the political line regarding the talks.Failure to do so could result in a strangehold on funding to Northern Cyprus from Turkey.Just my opinion,

Paul.

This is resultant from the EU's stupidity in allowing the accession of ROC into the EU after their NO vote on Annan and subsequent backtracking of promises made on direct trade. The Bubbles have blown both feet

off with a single shot by continuous intransigence. Mr C must be feeling like a right prat this evening. What

a bunch of tossers. Democracy rules in Northern Cyprus!

I can't help but feel sad that Talat has lost. I suspect he was a good man at heart, who was trying to do what he believed was the right thing for his constituents. I don't know much about Sayin Eroglu, but he has to step up to the plate and deliver some kind of a future!

Did I not read some where that Talat shed tears when the TRNC was formed, if this is correct the TCs have not shed tears in voting for Eroglu

RE msg 9, TopTen: Indeed. It was the day when Mr Rauf Denktaş became founding President of the TRNC, instigated by another great man, Dr Fazil Kücük, and others. Mr Talat chose that day to cry about the foundation of a safe place for Turkish Cypriots. Only to become President of TRNC later and start 'the talks' with his communist friend, the GC Christofias. TRNC history in a nutshell. I wish the current President, Mr Eroğlu and all TC's all the best and the prosperity they deserve.

I have been reading this bit about Talat crying now over a few posts, with mostly derogatory interpretations. I once met Mr Talat, many moons ago when he had just lost to Papa Denk in a Presidential election, and found him to be a reasonable fellow. Whilst he had nothing negative to say about Papa Denk, he still felt that he could be a good president of TRNC. Much is made of his weeping at the inauguration of TRNC. Maybe he was simply far-sighted enough to understand the full negative implications of this UDI. Perhaps he'd heard of Rhodesia and Mr. Iain Smith. I am NOT related to Mr Talat but I have visited his wife, professionally, on three occasions and my wife seems to think a lot of her.

I suggest we give him the benefit of the doubt when next time reference is made to his tears.

I see in the 'Star' newspaper that Eroglu promised that foreigners will get their title deeds....I wonder when?

And what about all those, including myself, who've been arbitrarily been refused PTP due the the fatuous excuse that they are in too proximity to the military.

Supposedly, we've all had our credentials checked by 'Uncle Tom Cobbley and all' in order to be granted our visas, so how do a bunch of retirees and pensioners pose a threat to the 'might of the Turkish military'?

the articles I read stated that he is a nationalist, who speaks very little English. His view of Cyprus in not unification but 2 seperate individual states.

RE msg 15, Katymckem: (...) who speaks very little English. (...)

=> Bl**dy h*ck! Dr. Derviş Eroğlu, the new President of TRNC, speaks very little English! Maybe he speaks very good Turkish, which is quite handy in this part of the world and especially in TRNC. And I'm almost sure he speaks better English (I heard him this morning in a radio interview), than Mr Gordon Brown speaks Turkish.

Here's more about President Eroğlu: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derviş_Eroğlu

=> And I quoted from her quoted statement.

P.S. I promise to read more English, if you promise to write capital letters where they belong in the English language. And the use of more than one exclamation mark is an error in that same English language. Have a nice evening.

Paul,

Excellent thread started and it is good to here what genuine EXPATS who are interested in what happens.

I do agree that Mr Ergolu will have his hands tied but from what I heard from TC's he is a man who realises that there is a lot at stake now rather than a few years ago.

I believe that there will be some changes but yes this is Cyprus so do not expect too many too soon.

going against the tide and knowing little or nothing about eroglu,

there is some tradition of hardliners offering peace deals:

think de gaul handing over algeria, begin giving back sinai,

nice ronald reagan doing business with the affable gobachev

and nixon pulling out of vietnam, making peace with mao's china

how so?

well given an underlying surge towards a peace deal,

the hardliners never have to look over their shoulders at critcs

and being nationalistic are trusted enough to make concessions

regarding the cyprus "dispute" though

I am yet to be convinced there were ever really the ingredients

available for some sort of deal to be in the offing

the idea that the wrong bloke elected will somehow scupper

what would not have happened anyway is logically unsound

and the current dark mood of our friends in the south

almost as if sulking over a broken toy,

does suggest they are being swept along by bigger events

than a local election in provincial north cyprus

Andre514,

Your last paragraph is the main eyecatcher as it will be interesting to hear what sounds come from that direction.

The south have had almost 2 years of a new President whose wonderful words in his pre election were 'we will be in Kyrenia by Christmas'! - this is all forgotten in the south and as you mention are they really bothered.

Eroglu will already have his mandate from Turkey, and will have been told in no uncertain terms that he must not start the talks all over again.Whether he heeds this advice, or orders, remains to be seen.Never a dull moment in Northern Cyprus,

Paul.

Much is being made of the fact that Eroglu does not speak English, neither does Sarkosy or Angela Merkel but it hasn't stopped them having their say. Let's just give the man a chance, things can only get better as they say.

please fall off your chairs with the "news" that turkey calls the shots in north cyprus

I can only say that:

firstly it is the regional superpower

secondly it has a powerful influence as the one active guarantor, and liberated the tc's

thirdly it has a permanent committment to the many of its own nationals settled in the trnc

fourthly due to the spiteful isolations it is forced to act as financial paymaster and support

lastly it inadvertantly acts as protector of the properties of much of the ex-pat population

'course , this may not be the ideal situation in very many repects...

but sadly the world is already overburdened with situations that are far from the optimum

Just read this on the 'Latest news from cyprus' newsboard...............

"Under the title Has the new negotiating team been determined? Turkish Cypriot daily Haberdar newspaper (20.04.10) reports that according to information acquired from reliable sources after the victory of Dervis Eroglu, chairman of the National Unity Party (UBP), in the illegal presidential elections of 18 April in the occupied areas of Cyprus, the names of the team of Mr Eroglu during the Cyprus negotiations with President Christofias are the following: Dr. Dervis Eroglu, Rauf Denktas (Advisor of the Negotiating Team), Ata Atun, Serdar Denktas (Chief Negotiator), Ismet Kotak, Taner Etkin, Huseyin Ozgurgun, Vedat Celik and Ergun Olgun."

Well I suspect Mr Christofias is missing his old friend Mr Talat already! I hope he's got lots of pairs of brown trousers
