VIENNA (Dow Jones)--Flights have resumed at Austrian airports after the local authorities reopened its airspace early Monday, though a majority of the flights to Western and Northern Europe remain canceled, operator Vienna Airport said Monday.



Local aviation authorities, Austro Control, resumed the use of Austrian airspace from 0300 GMT, after it was estimated that the ash cloud from the Icelandic Eyjafallajoekull volcano no longer posed a threat to the alpine nation.

Between 0345 GMT and 0700 GMT, 20 flights departed from Vienna International Airport (VIEV.VI), the country's main airport, airport spokesman Robert Dusek said. Dusek wouldn't estimate how many of daily 650 flights can be executed Monday.



While a large number Western- and North European destinations remain closed to traffic, most Eastern- and South European airports are now open to traffic, Dusek said.
