No1Doyen - good link. If it comes off it'll show the greedy bastards just what the EU really thinks of them. Which is not much. The GC's have prevaricated too long and created so many problems with their self-centred and overbearing attitude that they really do have it coming to them.

Long live the TRNC

Just checked the EU website which states that although debates are still being held there will be no votes in the plenary this week due to the persistence of volcanic ash which has prevented a significant number of MEP's reaching Strasbourg and the voting is to be postponed to the next session on 5th & 6th May - so there's another date for the diaries folks.

jimmyG, I checked several times over the the last few weeks and have yet to find any reference on a EU website to a Direct Trade for TRNC debate. Perhaps you could post the link? All I can find is rumours similar to the TRNC will enter the EU if they vote yes to the Annan Plan, rumour in 2004.

Paul - just googled eu vote & that popped up so no skill involved I'm afraid, but just hoping someone can find the eu agenda for this week. It must be there though otherwise why would the dark side be holding an enquiry as to why some of their officials missed the fact that potentially they could have lost their power of veto this week ?

JimmyG, I believe that votewatch is just that, a website which shows you how MEPs voted. As I say, the Direct Trade rumour seems to have little substance to it. I have no doubt that some MEPs want to reintroduce the issue but so far there is no evidence that they have done so. Surprisingly a lot is being made of this unsubstantiated rumour.

Malcolm, I still think there must be something in it otherwise why the furore on the dark side? As Paul said much was made of this in the Cyprus Mail that their veto could no longer be used to vote down proposals and that a majority decision would suffice. I really hope that someone somewhere can find something which can clarify one way or the other as I don't think I can last until 5th or 6th May!!!

MEMBERS OF the European Parliament (EP) will meet next Tuesday to discuss whether the legal basis for the European Commission’s proposed regulation on direct trade with the occupied north is the right one.

The EP’s International Trade Committee convened in Strasbourg on Monday night, without its chairman due to the volcanic ash travel disruptions, where they discussed the contentious issue of direct trade with the north

Nothing has been decided as yet.The talks will resume on May 26th they will probably drag on until the end of the year.It will then be decided that there is deadlock in the talks.Northern Cyprus will then be told that they can trade if Turkey opens some of its ports.Northern Cyprus will become a "Tiawnese state" and hopefully that should be the end of it.Just my thoughts, one thing is certain though, and that is there has definiteley been no more talks on direct tade for the North,

Paul.

a report in the "famagusta" gazette suggests the gc regime is seriously rattled:

in theory the Regulation could even set free the north by year's end and so on...

but you have to ask yourself why the eurocrats should help the trnc at this late stage?

no scientific basis for saying this but are europeans worried as much as americans,

mostly about turkey cutting its losses and in disgust going off in the "wrong" direction?

...whatever the "wrong" direction may be

"Dont you think that the middle east has more to offer Turkey then Europe, "

What has the middle east to offer? Cant think of any mid east country apart from maybe Iran that has much of an industrial base. Apart from selling arms ,dont see the benifits to Turkey.

Turkey, or any other country for that matter will not get into EU,.After this Greece thing ,it will be a long time before a western european country dare mention such a thing as a new entry.

Dont see any problem with strong trade agreements .

Girne,

I was thinking more of direct trade with Northern Cyprus and countries like Lebanon,Syria,Bahrain.I personally think to join the e.u. now would be the equivalent of flogging a dead horse,

Direct trade with TRNC would be symbolic only,as to trade with people, you must have, or make something, others want.Reason the embargo was enforced was not for economic reasons but rather to isolate and prevent the recognition that lifting the embargo would have entailed. If ,as seems likely ,TRNC becomes part of Turkey then trade is not required but perhaps could earn their keep through some sort of invisible earnings,

Paul

You are right about flogging a dead horse,EU should just tell Turkey thats it and we can all stop wasting the next 10years in pointless negotiations. For the TRNC it would be good as the ROC would no longer be able to use its constant blackmail as regards Turkeys bid, and would be relegated to making the tea in Brussels for the big boys. Special trading arrangements would not require Turkey in EU,just a vote in Brussels ,which would be in everyones interest.

Sorry, but no contest, trading with Lebanon or France, Syria or Germany, Bahrain or Holl

Girne,

The more trading partners the merrier i say.Lebanon and France Syria and Germany Dubai and Holland. As there is no manufacturing to speak of in the North it will always be difficult, but there is plenty of land for crops etc which could be exported WHEN the embargoes are lifted.

Geoff,

Sorry about Bahrain must have been a middle aged moment,
