The only thing we use tap water for is washing. Costs about 1tl per day for the 19lt bottles.

My trust in tab water in TRNC is low (where was the source?, possible contamination on the way to my tab, in several places lead pipes are still used etc). In restaurants and bars I only accept water from a closed bottle, which should be opened at my table.

Back to your question: I wonder if a general report about tab water in TRNC can be made. Circumstances are different on both sides of the mountains and different in the Mesoaria plain, the cities and villages.

So I second what Minertor wrote in post # 2.

The quality of tap water depends on its source, treatment and distribution. Any sample taken and analysed could pass one day and fail a week later depending on conditions.

A RO system is one way of making clean, healthy water but the cost will depend on the output, i.e. how many tonnes per 24 hours. If your need is commercial you may require quite a large installation.

I have been involved in a couple of these installations and if you ring me on 0533 845 8494, I'll tell you what I know.

Vaughan's answer is in the right direction - the most improtant answers come from the reason & why you need it and the source (different parts of the same village may have different springs or wells in use).

What volumes of water are you expecting to use?

We can offer domestic units from Culligan, Liff, Aquadial and other manufacturers as well as units large enough for commercial dairies.

Is your main concern bacteria, nitrates, sodim, heavy metals etc? It might be that you only need some filtration and UV rather than Reverse Osmosis which tends to be expensive and also can depend on your incoming pressure being high.

You wont buy less and better quality anywhere.

RE msg 11, tommy13: (...) are you saying its not possible to purify famagusta municipality water dutch to an acceptable level of quality ? (...)

=> Not to a level that I would trust, but that of course is a very personal opinion. And I do not trust bottled water from TRNC either. Do you remember that two or three years ago the TRNC government had to close down some TRNC companies because they sold contaminated water from the Mesoaria? I do. How many bottles were sold and circulated? We never read a decent answer. That's why I only want Evsu water from Turkey.

Any water can be purified - I understand Culligan even supply well purification units for the US army in Afghanistan. In North Cyprus that type of unit might not be needed!

You would do best to get a report locally but that like an MOT is only valid on the day it was tested.

Tommy - for any quality solution that can be used for volumes the kit will 90% sure need to be imported.

If you bought from us you could arrange either through our freight forwarders (for flights) in Stansted or with Jo Valentine to have the goods sent as a part consignement by road & sea.

In many instances they could be shipped within 4/5 working days.

Email me your phone number and we can talk.

What is wrong with you weak poms? On arrival back into the TRNC, down 2 pints of tap water, might get the shits for the first couple of days but then your immune system kicks in and then everything is hunky dory thereafter!

Evsu is not coming from Turkey. Factory is in near Alaykoy. In north Cyprus we have 58 brands of bottled water but big factories just only 7. they are ICY, EVSU,GÜRPINAR,AQUA FRESH, TRODOS, MEYSU and CEMER SU. The biggest one in market is EVSU but most quality one is ICY because they just produce water in 1700 sq meter factory with 65 worker and they have a own laboratory aswell. I used that since 2001 and when I went to their new factory 2 years ago I saw their producing period from road because factory is have a glass front.their phone number is 0392 444 444 1. They speak English. Don't use tap water in north Cyprus for drinking and Don't drink the water after RO. because RO is take all of the mineral. its not good for health

Thanks for all that very good advice, 'musy313' - it's always best to know the real facts!

Also, one reason not to use [home] RO units is because about 3 or even 4 parts of water used goes to waste after cleaning the filtres, which get contaminated sooner in TRNC due to the [bad] quality of the water being passed through them.

What this means is that you get about 1 litre of drinking water [less all beneficial minerals] to every 4 litres of water that passes through your water meter - costly, eh, especially when you add the cost of electricity to permanently run the RO unit and [more] frequent need to buy new filtres!

As i understand Gurpinar is just tap water that is run through a reverse osmosis machine anyway and Cemer Su has got to be something similar as it tastes awful. With regards to the rest of them the water all comes from the same place that tap water comes from and it is filtered. We live in bellapais and I have started drinking the water I for one think its all a big scam. All the mainland workers drink the water and laugh at us, their alright.

Tenakoutou I have not enough English for explain you everything for water. But don't trust all of the companies. You are true about the RO (home).

Dusterbruce, tap water is don't do anything in a short time but when you use it everything its start after 50 y.o. maybe its not have a bacteria but its have lots of salt and lime.

And another information, RO system is just clean salt, mineral and lime not bacteria.

We have suggested before to make tap water more palatable at a reasonable price UV & filtration is sufficient (this is what is recommended by British water authorities to clients when using water from bore holes or streams) see the FP20N on http://www.softcleanwater.co.uk for technical details see http://softcleanwater.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=8

How long does water in 19ltre bottles last time wise? I've left a couple of full unopened Evsu ones in my apartment which are now months old. When I return should I simply pour away and replace?

Tom,

I beg to differ!

The water in the 19 Ltr bottles is not sterile, and if stored anywhere in bright light, will tend to start turning green - I've seen it happen, within weeks, rather than months. While (green) algae probably won't hurt you too much, the other trace bugs in the water might well do so, if stored in sunny places in hot weather, and allowed to multiply - Urgh!

we left a half full 19l bottle on our dispenser for about 6 months while back in old blighty. Was fine. Admittedly keithcaley it wasn't in the sun. All our villa is nice and shady inside

Keith thanks I have no experience with these bottles - I assumed that the water would be stored in a "cool" dark place but if not sterile it is wise to play safe. Martin - Keiths advice seems sound but if you do need to throw it use it wisely on the garden.
