I've read on a couple of different threads on this forum that the new President doesn't speak english. According to this article he speaks fluent english & greek!

Not sure about the level of his english, but pretty sure about the his knowledge in greek is very good. Not that it matters at all as they'd have interpreters at meetings.

yorgozlu,

Quite right, why does it matter?

The leader of any country has every right to speak to other leaders in his native tongue - the interpreters will do the rest.

I would guess that most of those non Turkish speakers that moan about this speak little or no Turkish themselves!

Regards,

Ozbey.

quite agree, dont think anyone in EU at this moment in time

gives a fig whether he speaks another EU language or not ,neither does anyone in Europe care if Mr C only speaks Greek or not.

Both sides in Cyprus have more important things to worry about within the Cypriot arena and the EU has more important things to worry about within the European arena.Interpreters are there for a purpose.

Speaking English, and having the fluency to discuss an agreement as complex as the Cyprus issue are two very different things.

Ideally you would need to be a lawyer with English, Turkish and Greek mother tougues to grasp the subtleties - otherwise, get some translators !

It doesn't matter, his negotiating team which will include Rauf and Serdar Denktash (allegedly) speak perfect English.
