Now that Talat has been defeated and "Rambo" Eroglu has taken over the reigns,it seems to me that the chances of Turkey joining the E.U. have become even slimmer then slim itself. What now would be the chances of a "velvet divorce".I know this is something that i have banged on about for months, but i just wondered what peoples tjhought where on the matter, Paul.

Paul there is no way that Turkey is going to allow Eroglu to call the shots re their EU accession. The tail does not wag the dog.

stubs, obviously turkey is the major player in north cyprus, it is not a "difficult" concept few would pretend otherwise and many in the north may even be happy with that as regards tails wagging dogs, I would suggest a very good recent example of it is pipsqueak south cyprus telling the "mighty" eu and europe's courts what's what unfortunately for my illustration, that tail seems to have been nipped off of late, as your cohorts will be painfully aware 'course if the idea of the dominance of turkey does not appeal for whatever reason, then speak up for the independence of north cyprus and an end to the isolations... you'd be surprised then how amenable turkey and by inference eroglu become andre

Turkey wants to accede to the EU and Eroglu will not be allowed to derail that process. Without funding from Turkey, the TRNC could not survive and money will be the carrot that brings him into line (should he attempt to move away from the 'Motherlands' agenda). Turkey must view the TRNC as a bit of a black hole into which they are having to throw millions of TL without any noticeable payback and will be keen to get this particular 'monkey' off its back. Just my opinion of course. Paul

yes paul, north cyprus is a burden for turkey, but one thinks also of the lyric "he's not heavy he's my brother" well maybe! and as some pundits claim ex-mainlanders are set to dominate, perhaps are already the majority in the trnc though probably not payback? I think national prestige is another name of the game turkey welcome to join the eu apart from the cyprus dispute? many wonder andre
