Firstly apologies to one and all for the long delay in announcing the confirmation of the long awaited cricket match. I have been waiting for confirmation that we can borrow cricket gear from one of the Army units in the SBA's in the South before I set the hare running (plan early plan twice) and this is now confiirmed.

The game will be a 20/20 match which will take place in the Alsancak stadium on the Mare Monte road on Saturday 15 May (it has to be a Saturday as the Pakistani team are busy serving Sunday lunches the day after) commencing at a time TBC but probably 1pm.

The aim of this match is to have a no fuss fun event which will hopefully be exciting for specators and participants alike. Families, friends, dogs, cats and the family budgie are all welcome to make this a real social event and there will be a bar and a food stall available on the day, although you are welcome to bring your own and have a picnic/BBQ as you cheer the team along!

Entry will be free. to be cont. Br

Contd.. I have a list of persons who have shown an interest in playing, umpiring, scoring or assisting and I will post that tomorrow on this thread. I will now lactively ook at securing sponsorship for the cost of the hire of the stadium, a perpetual trophy and perhaps T shirts for the teams.

Cheers

A now crippled, ex Wellington University cricket player who can still whack the ball about, can bowl a one step spin, right arm over leg break, any good to you? Was clocked at 73 mph and had one trial to play for NZ in my prime, but that was decades ago, am I of any use to you?

The kit is arriving on Thursday 13 May so Max would like to organise a practice session on Friday afternoon 14 May, please indicate if you will be available. It will be held at the training pitch at Alsancak Stadium.

The match will go ahead at 2pm on Saturday 15 May.

This should be a great afternoon, spread the word and lets get a good crowd behind us (I am aware that a certain section of bridge playing Scottish people are planning to back the opposition!!)

Fred - your points noted.

Max (Team Manager) will sort out the practice session, keep the faith.

Reference return match - we will guage how well supported the match is this year, but more importantly how much everyone enjoys it before we look at making it an annual fixture in the diary, which is the intention. The Pakistani team cannot wait even though none of them have never played with a proper cricket ball, so that should even the 'age' factor out a bit! We are meeting Riaz this evening to tie up a few loose ends.

Cheers

Thank you to all of you that have been in contact with Brian (Odd Major) providing details of your availability and personal skills. For all of you that provided an email address I've sent a reply providing details of the practice session and format of the match itself. If you've provided a mobile phone, I'll text you a summary in due time. It's my intention to get down to the Alsancak football stadium for approx 10.30am on Friday 14th May, in order to carry out the marking out of the cricket square, and boundaries, any help (and advice) would be much appreciated. The practice session will start at 2pm on the training ground. Be there or be square. Max....

Well Minertor, I don't know who you are, but I don't believe a posting on a friendly cricket match between the ex-pats & the boys from the Punjab is the right forum to vent your anger. If it's your intention to put people off by coming to support the event, I hope that you haven't succeeded. The afternoon of fun is sandwiched in between the yearly flower show & the FA Cup Final, and it's sole intention is to bring smiles to the faces of both the participants and spectators and I'm sure that we'll achieve that objective. Of course (as I believe from your members details) as a Yorkshireman like me, when taking part you always try hard to win, but in this instance it's not the b-all. The gentleman that you have openly attacked, through his hard work and endeavour has enabled this event to take place with all the supporting amenities. Surely not a qualification to (as you put it) dump him. Rest well in Gods Country (Yorkshire) and I hope time will heal your ailments before returning. Max..

Well Minertor, msg 'Stay out of what you don't understand'

I'm afraid that it is YOU who doesn't understand....

I am the captain of the EX Pats not the Odd Major.

Before spewing your profound knowledge all over the Cyprus 44 forum please get YOUR facts right or else you are in great danger of losing credibility.

re your msg 64

QUOTE

and good day to you sir!

Minertor, Tony Ford, is an upright honest Yorkshireman who can get carried away when he feels he has been maligned. I know him personally and can vouch for his integrity.

RE msg 70 & 71, denizen: Wouldn't your parents or your teachers (if you had any?) be ashamed about the way you abuse the beautiful English language? Please finish a crash course (school may be too late).

Not wishing to take sides here, but it's "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink" (as opposed to "think".) Otherwise, it makes no sense at all.

RE msg 73, Jeannie: (...) drink or think (...()

=> Exactly - in the case of message 70 & 71...

P.S. Back to the thread: I hope the cricket fans have a nice match!

Message 71 arouses my suspicions somewhat

Apart from the fact that it is virtually unintelligible, there is the mention of 'Uncle T' - who I take to be 'Uncle Ted'?. I fear they have reared their ugly heads yet again. For those still in doubt, please refer to Nige's board, message under the heading of "Did they get here safely".

Or, I am, of course, paranoid?

I've sent an email to all those that gave Brian an email address detailing arrangements and send text's to everyone else. If there is anyone that I have missed please call me on 0533 845 2610. I went down to the stadium last week (twice) and the resident groundsmen (Ibriham & his boss) have said that they will mark the wicket based on a drawing that I will provide. I'll take the drawing down on Thursday so that they can mark out on Friday. The Pakistani's will be practising on Friday morning (11am), and we take over the training area in the afternoon at 2pm. See you all there, Max....

Well the cricket gear arrived today - not the best that I have seen but I suppose that it is the same for both teams. If anyone possesses their own equipment I would be grateful if you could bring it along on Saturday.

Seems like there is a lot of interest in the event and the official scorer is practicing his John Arlott quips as we speak!

Need answers to two questions

1) Is it definitely a 1pm start?

2) Who is going to do the customary streak?

Good turn out and a few very good players, I was happily surprised! The track/square is very, very dodgy but hope everyone will have a great afternoon tomorrow. I trust the bar will be well stocked!

Just been told that the Pakistani suporters will number at least 50 tomorrow and will have flage etc, surely the Expats can better that? Get your flags ready, don't need sun brollies as you will be sat in the shade in the main stand with a great front seat view with the wickets in the centre circle facing north & south as you look from the stand.

Max is confident that if the team that practiced today drink enough linseed oil tonight to fight off the aches and pains then we will at least give them a game tomorrow.

The stadium, bars etc will be open and available from 1pm, the game will commence at 2pm and should be finished by 5pm. This is a fun event so I am sure that everyone attending will take it in the spirit that it is intended and may the best team win.

The VIP guest has been booked to open the contest.

Would love to see you all there.

Best

Just met the oddmajor and I think it is a great idea and will be a fantastic family afternoon. We should all support them as we need more of these kind of occassions. Good luck to the oldies and the Pakistanis are already complaining about the pitch!!!!! See you all there.

I am not a fan of cricket (basically because I don't understand the game) but I would like to wish all of those involved a lovely afternoon.

Great idea!

Well we're all ready, yesterday we had a succesful training session that pleasantly revealed some real talent amongst the ex-pat team. Weather looks good, and both teams are ready. If you haven't made your mind up we would all love to see you down there this afternoon. There's a special guest who will officiate the toss, and we pitch wickets at 2pm. The game should be over by 5pm (latest) so that you ardent football fans can watch the FA Cup Final. Max........

Ex pats all out for below 40 runs and overs in hand, the other team lost two players by the time they had overtaken the score - end of match. Some lovely swinging hits by the man of the match - a handsome member of the Pakistan team! Great afternoon! Thanks to all concerned.

Brian,

You and Max should be extremely proud of the magnificent event you staged today. It must have taken an enormous effort to put it all together - sponsors, venue, trophies etc.

All I can say as a cricket lover (and I think all such would agree) is a big thank you for such a wonderful afternoon's entertainment. 300+ spectators will no doubt agree.

A note to Max; when drawing up your wish kit for next year, don't forget a catching cradle -ouch!!

Best wishes

Kevin Ryan
