A Royal Bank of Scotland insurance executive who swindled £1million to fund a life of luxury with his new bride in Cyprus has been jailed for six years.

Terry Thackrah, 58, siphoned the money after discovering a 'simple' fraud plan while working for the bank's insurance division.

His jet-set lifestyle, which allowed him to retire to a four-bedroom villa in Northern Cyprus and splash out on a £50,000 Range Rover, finally caught up with him when colleagues tipped off police.

This guy used to drive a flash black Range Rover Sport with the number plate TERRY. I used to see him and his Thai wife in the supermarket.

Haven't seen them recently, now I know why.

This was on the local TV news last night.

He worked for Green Flag/Direct Line and somehow managed to have commissions directed to his own bank accounts rather than that of his employers. He was arrested boarding his flight back to Cyprus after visiting his daughter in Wakefield.

He will spend half his sentence in prison and half on licence in the community, which community UK or NC?

Wot 6 years mean then? Open prison or tagged and let loose? A third remission and a third parole? Time on remand taken into consideration? Seems to me he is likely to still have an annual income of the million £s whilst we will pay subsistence for family and prison visits (oops, silly me, he probably will go home at weekends). Tough on crime and causes of - yeah right ! Deputy Dawg law. Daily insertion of red hot poker in his rectum but with some degree of compassion for his rehabilitation ie cold end inserted and when he pulls it out he will burn his thieving fingers !

Just had the same conversation as DD's thoughts. 6 years and money confiscated? Assets confiscated?

A nice easy 3-4 years in an open prison and look what he's got to come back to. All that interest earned and the rest of the, probably clever, investments. Not exactly off-putting is it!!

I think you will find out that his property and assets will get a certain time to be sold privately. Otherwise it will be sold at Auction as what happened to the 'Lapta Generator Thief'

He will not be able to re enter the TRNC again or own property as not get Police Record Clearance!

Assuming you are referring to the UK Police:

I accept an indiidual without a clean Police Record cannot be approved for Permission to Purchase, but what will stop him entering/renting/wife owning, etc?

I believe there is no way you need a clean police Record to go anywhere that does not require a Visa, even then, only serious criminals will be barred.

PS. Is his number plate for sale.

Regards

Steve (brother of someone else called Terry).

Make no mistake - money buys you anything! How much did Robb pay for his citizenship? How much would a clean police record cost you? Want a new passport, probably around the same cost as a real one after 1st May!

If he wants to come back and can pay for it - he will be back. BRS membership will still cost him £10.00 mind you.

Msg 3. I find this really odd?! I know both Terry and Jara (and her son) and although I don't condone what he has done, both Jara and her son are 2 of the most polite, well-mannered people that I have ever come acros (generally, let alone out here) so as for 'wrecking a ladies toilet', I doubt that very much! Ok, he has comitted a crime and is now being punished, but I dont think a lot of slanderous rubbish is necessarily very fair, especially against Jara and a teenager. I'm sure many people have a general opinion about what has happened and that is fair enough, but to start slagging off people that you obviously DON'T know, is in my view, not very nice.

Re msg 14 - would any evidence given be admissible in a UK court? Only ask as the TRNC has not been given any help to exist by the UK and in fact is not even here! Why is it that when the UK wants something from people here that this country exists but when the country wants something it is not only an illegal state but will not be helped by anyone other than Turkey?

Admittedly most of my postings attempt to be of a humorous, tongue-in-cheek nature (and probably fail miserably!).............but this WARNING is serious:

While in UK, I witnessed a savage 'grievous bodily harm' attack on an innocent man by a maniacal, vicious second-hand car dealer. The victim later died as a result.

I gave a true statement to the police, along with a solo-mother, who was also at the party.

This criminal was allowed to read our statements and our names and addresses - both I and the lady were hounded for a long time afterwards by this maniac, who had a horrendous record for assault and battery and yet had got away with it all, Scott-free - incredible!

This (big) criminal attacked me in a pub toilet many months later - unfortunately for him he'd wrong one this time!

Unless the British police have changed their policy of allowing witness details to be given to known, violent criminals, be very wary of giving any statement that could incriminate one.

Lets not forget that it was Terry that commited this crime, wrong I know but what good would it do to 'grass' him up for his assets or whatever here in North Cyprus. Would you feel happy knowing you had made a woman and her son homeless!!

This lad is as others have said is very polite and I can not imagine him wrecking anything!

If thıs man had settled for a more modest lifestyle - e.g. not swanned around in a top-of-the-range 'Range Rover', wıth his name emblazoned on the number plate, he would probably still be savouring the delights of an adequately comfortable lifestyle in TRNC!

Is that arrogance, or what?

I guess he could hardly use the excuse that he'd mistakenly got the bank's money a little bit muddled up with his own!

authentichoccie,

I can't believe you are advocating letting the man's ill-gotten gains remain secret so they can't be seized?

What if he'd made his fortune from drug dealing? Murder? Prostitution? Still no fault of the 'new wife' or 'step-son'.

I sympathise with them but plenty of honest people in the UK, here and the rest of the world have nothing but what they stand-up in. If they should lose the home bought with other people's money so be it... it was never really theirs if it was bought via crime.

I also have a substantial loss, I mean investment in RBS so would appreciate any news should the car be for sale as would be interested in swapping some shares for it. Seriously though I am looking for a decent 4 wheel drive so would be interested if anyone knows if it will be for sale. I bought a Suzuki Escudo last year for around £2500 when I bought my villa but I have not driven it yet but am told that it needs some repairs, possibly new radiator etc. before it is roadworthy, so will probably sell it on.

Before we all get carried away nobody actually knows if his wife knew anything about this. She is Thai and Thai women don't usually get involved with the financial side of things in the household!

I know this as my daughter-in-law is Thai and have another 2 friends married to Thai girls.

The unfortunate thing is that if you punish the thief then his/her family will also end up being punished however you can't just allow thiefs to get away with it because the people who have been robbed are now being punished by the losses.

A bit of a catch 22 really but the only way to avoid this is to be honest and upstanding.

Somebody has to lose in this situation and IMO it should not be the innocents but saying that his family are guilty by association and at risk because of his choices whether they new about them or not.

In this day and age DO people really believe that POOR WOMEN ARE SO SO NIAVE!!

If it was round other way then would anyone say poor husband- I dont think so.

Thats whats wrong with our society too many doogooders and yet in this part of the world YOU are GUILTY BY Association and thats why crime is minimal. And how many EXPATS on this thread have said how lovely and virtually crime free TRNC is, yes hypocrites all of you who say poor wee wifey!!

' it may help restore what is not his to its righful owners.'

I am not sure whether any one defrauded of money or goods will ever get sufficient recompense as it appears that at least 50% of all recovered monies are ploughed back into the running of the Police Force.

I would be happy to be proven wrong about this.

If I thought for a moment that RBS shareholders would ever see any of this recovered money I would agree with you 100%. Comparing "victimless" white collar crime with drug dealing, prostitution, etc., often attracts little sympathy.

Doesn't mean I approve of what he has done, but I don't think others should be punished for his crime.

You may well be right, but I still beieve in and support the Proceeds of Crime Act as the point is partially to act as a deterrent.

It should put an end to the concept of illegalling gaining money and paying the price of a few years inside as the downside knowing that you will be very comfortably off when you come out. It is only the proceeds of crime that are seized after all

I hope that we are all trying to win hearts and minds with regard to embargoes being lifted and therefore we must illustrate, with the Turkish Cypriots, that this is a country of right minded people who have no time for thieves and the like. Short of taking on personal risk, should we not do all possible to assist the police? It was once a very effective Police FORCE respected throughout the world which, through political interference, became a Police SERVICE to the advantage of criminals. It must be soul destroying to see much of their efforts to collate evidence rubbished by the CPS tasked to provide statistics re crime which reflect well on government. Would not wish to try and force my views on anyone but obviously I am delighted the more people who believe "that the policeman's lot is not a happy one" through little fault of their own. Surely, the alternative to not giving assistance, when possible, is that we all live amongst an increasing number of criminals?
