We have been to the south recently, twice in fact and have had trouble both times with the Greek Customs.

First of all must point out we have a UK reg car, so they obviously know we are british. First time 3 of them ganged up on us and were being very nasty and were cross examining us, asking ,if we had bought property etc; which we of course denied!!!!! They wanted to know which port we came in from and demanded papers. Then they told us they were letting us through this once and we had to have permission if we ever wanted to stay in the south. as we were unwelcome.

The second time we were picking family up from Larnaca airport and they wanted to know where we had come from... seeing us we were stuck between borders it was obvious. They then said we could not bring our family back through, we said were just visiting them and they were staying in the south and they eventually let us through. This all took at least 30 mins. Should they really treat EU citizens this way ?

I have been through the border when first coming to the North then on my return to Larnaca, I was asked to get out of the Taxi by the Greek customs while I was given a lecture on what I could take through and had my cases opened and searched.

I suppose they are only doing their job, but I felt uncomfortable, following that I have been through as couple times by car with no problems, and I have also been across at the Ledra Palace and by the Basar in the city centre by foot with no problems.

report it to your embasy. if you let them go with all this sh*t then nobody will take care of the sick behavoir of the GC border police.. maybe you should set up something like a database where all this could be reported to so you can go there with a bunch of info.

personally never faced any problems

henrik,

As another member of this forum can testify, even when accompanied by a highly ranked member of the EU border control commision who flew in from Italy to check that what he complained about was not happening, the border staff still refused to abide by EU required law in favour of what their bosses had told them.

I agree that people should complain to the embassy but if they will not budge when confronted by an EU official why would they listen to us pointing out that they are in the wrong.

As Deniz1 has stated, they will do whatever they want regardless of whether it is correct.

Use the crossings into the ESBA. Absolutely no problems and lots of smiles.

Not long after the border was opened my car was searched and the lady officer found a ' Tourist Guide to Northern Cyprus ' and told me to accompany her into the police office where she gave the sergeant the book.

I asked what the problem was and was told that the book contained adverts for property. I pointed out it was a tourist book but to no avail. I was detained for about 15 minutes then told me I could go.

That was in the early days and I can honestly say that no matter which crossing I use nowadays ,I have always found them quite pleasent

Have had few problems over the last 4 years. But every so often they get on their "high horses" and try to intimidate visitors. Especially regarding property which they regard as all G/C owned !

The south side Pyla people used to always give me and my friends a very hard time.....

Ironic that they are UK government officials from the SBA .....

But the insurance lady Rabiye Sayer is lovely,I was stranded there last year (my mate didn't have the MOT slip from Metehan) and we had dinner !!!

Never had a problem going into or coming out of the SBA. The added bonus at AY NIK is the MMG shop and cafe....takes me back to my days in green.

No need to answer Hatti, one of the penalties of not being the sharpest knife in the box is that you do not realise....Sad really.

This goes for around 95% of people viewing this post.......or is this just me trying to make you think?

Hilltop, the whole point of the posting is about difficulty at the crossings and my wife can't cross so No, I don't know much about crossings and the south.

I use the Pyla crossing whenever I go to larnace airport but I don't have time to explore the place. Maybe I will now that I have the info you posted. I can never cross in Nicosia with my wife because she has a non EU passport and even though legally she is able to cross when I accompany her they won't allow it. I can now at least try Pyla with her and then go for a look around, might even ask about the MMG shop, Not !!

Genuinely though, thanks for the info. I have mentioned the predicament to many people but nobody ever told me that the Pyla crossing was SBA conntrolled so we should be able to get across there with a wedding cert.

Paul

If you cross at PYLA, the nearest facility you will recognise is CESSAC at Dhekelia. There is also a Lambros Chippy there.

If you need directions let me know.

Crossing into AY NIK is a pleasure(did it today). The South is very very quiet.

Regards
