Looking to cross the border to attend a wedding in the South. Can anyone advise if it is possible to purchase insurance at the Pyla crossing?

Also car has UK plates, is this ok if you take all necessary paperwork/documents with you??

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Do you have a green card?If so ,you wont need nothing other then your passaport. If not.it'll be normal procedure just to get a months insurance. And yes,it is possible to get insurance at all crossings other then the foot crossing in Nicosia.

So,don't panic, jump in your car ,get there and enjoy yourself.Often they don't bother with anything else once you showed them your Brittish passaport.

Yorgozlu - Thanks for info. Don't have a green card, so will make sure I have all paperwork and passports and just purchase the insurance at border.

Thank you

You won't be able to buy insurance at Pyla unless you have a Tax/MOT paper from Metahan.

Being ever so slightly pedantic

The "Border" is at Beyermudu.

Yeah Newcoop I've always been puzzled by this one... why is it called the Pyla crossing?

Being technically even more pedantic.. the 'border' is the Med Sea ;) !

If taking a UK reg'd car, *I* would only cross at Sovereign Base check points - they KNOW what you need .. Current UK Tax , UK MOT, Green card based on UK insurance, Vehicle Registration Doc- if you aren't the registered keeper - permission to drive the car and a current UK driver's licence.

IF the UK Tax / MOT / UK insurance have expired, then you are driving illegally - unless you have registered the car in a third country and awaiting papers.

BTW in case you want to cross and get back the Greek name for the 'Pyla' crossing is Pergamos /Πέργαμος

Where have you been lately?

it's been way too quiet without your own style of pedantry.

By the way, not being pedantic but Pergamos is actally Beyermudu rather than Pyla.

We've never been asked to show insurance docs at Pyla... they seem more interested in if we've got shed loads of fags... which we don't have.

to be even more pendantic, the border are probably 22km into the Mediterranean.

"Nations subscribing to the Law of the Sea observe a territorial limit of 12 nautical mi (22 km) from shore. Territorial rights include the airspace above those waters and the seabed below them."

Newscoop,

It's Beyarmudu not 'Beyermudi' so I nominate me as pedant of the week!

Hilltop - You won't be able to buy insurance at Pyla unless you have a Tax/MOT paper from Metahan.

The vehicle has been taxed and insured in the TRNC for the past 3 yrs (due to have TRNC plates when we next tax it) does this mean we still need to go to Metahan before we can cross at Pyla/Beyarmudu!?

It's all very complicated!

If you are still thinking of driving your car to Cyprus, make sure you get one of those. It'll save you alot of hussle and money on the way here. And,while here you wont need to buy insurance every time you want to go to south either.Though,it is not valid in TRNC.

KK.

Not got much experience of having a UK registered vehicle on the Island for 3 years, but presumably it will not have UK tax or MOT?

In my opinion you will have to go to Metahan just to collect the bit of paper (not sure how they will view the length of time it has been on the island though).

Newscoop,

That Star Kibris (Turkish edition) gets it wrong surprises nobody... that I do, even less I guess!

Even though others would have you believe otherwise, I'm not quite anal enough to do it purely to prove you wrong but I drove through there yesterday getting my daughter back to the UK (She'd been delayed a week by the volcanic ash fiasco) and saw the spelling first hand... My incorrect attribution of 'Beyermudi' to you was merely a typo.. but thanks for pointing it out... I think....
