If a dog has had no interaction with people or other dogs, it is very hard to 'learn' how to play, especially if he has had some kind of abuse...ie, he may not chase a stick as he maybe used to being beaten with it etc. The best thing to do is to keep playing with him, and praise him plenty, persevere is the key word.

Can't you just love him as he is? Or am I missing something, Liz?

When we got our little girl she had no idea how to play so we started throwing a ball between myself and hubby and calling her to join in at the same time. Then we started throwing it to her, at first she would run away from it but over time she got the idea and started chasing it and now???? Be careful what you wish for! She now plays with everything, ball, stick, stone, mandarin Yup, even fruit isn't safe as she thinks it's a toy if it's round! We wouldn't have her any other way and she now plays when she's not sleeping, eating or walking! Good luck xx

Some dogs just don't like to play "fetch". I am sure he will excel at something else so don't worry about it.
