First - my knowledge is very limited.

After a major virus attached to the boot up I had to have the hard drive completely wiped - fortunately had a complete back up only a couple of weeks old.

I now have open office (FREE) which is as easy to use as Office (in other words idiot proof which is what i need)

Have been recommended to look at Linux and UBUNTU to replace windows operating system.

Does anyone have any useful experience/knowledge of these (without resorting the usual irrelevant twaddle)

Kath,

As I posted on another thread, Linux using UBUNTU is a very good system and as all virus's (or so I have been informed) are written in linux, completely protected however I found it very hard going to use linux as it isn't just click and go as windows and mac are.

If it were my choice I would go with mac but Apple do not condobne usage of there software on a windows computer although they have not stopped it or made it illegal as yet. Living in NC, I wiould be surprised why that would bother anyone as things stand. A mac system is very expensive but the simple thing is that the choice is yours.

As I say I prefer mac but windows 7 is quite good and if you have a good Anti-virus software (Panda cloud is my prefernce) you should not be caught again.

I hope this might help in some small way. I would choose to give Hans a mail but there could be allsorts of mails now against you making your own decision.

I totally agree with the open office Kath,

I have it on my mac as I don't want to pay for another licence for the office for mac and as far as I can tell it works perfectly, you just have to remember to save the fikles in a format that can be read by mocrosoft office if you are sending it to someone else or if you want to open the file on another computer.

Happy computing, Paul

Hi Kath

I have used both Ubuntu and MSWindows (on a dual booting system) from the point of evaluation and it worked OK. I would recommend loading linux/ununtu on a clean system however.

Ubuntu works on a 'windows' type' display and is very similar, so its only a minor learning curve. Many of the aplications (office etc.) are free, which is a bonus and you you can get some quite good packages on many of the support sites.

Linux/Ubuntu tend to be faster in operation and so far seems to be virus free, although i would recommend running a virus checker anyway (AVG produces a free version for linux)

You may find it difficult to find driver software for things like printers and other peripherals, depending on what you use, but a visit to the manufacturers web site may prove fruitful.

So far i have been happy with ubuntu, and there are on-line guides available should you need them.

Good luck

Thanks all

I have a 2nd old computer that is a bit slow and not in use at the moment, think I will try it on that and have a play to get familiar with it to it (when I can get my other screen back off my son - who seems to need dual screens!)
