Just watched an interesting programme on BBC iPlayer about the break up of the Ottoman empire and the eventual rise of Turkey under the Leadership of Ataturk.

The first half hour of the programme focuses on the middle east and in particular the creation of Israel.

The second half shows that the Greeks and Turks lived peacefully side by side in Turkey and then war broke out. I never realised what a brutal war this was. There is an interview with a Greek woman who was expelled from Turkey and sent to Greece. She talks about how she misses her homeland in Turkey. In return for the expulsion of Greeks from Turkey, Greeks expelled half a million Turks from their country and sent them back to Turkey.

There are some uncanny similarities with Cyprus.

ps the footage is quite remarkable

You can watch the programme for another 6 days. Go to channels and look under BBC4.

You can download it from the web. Go to the BBC iPlayer site. You must be able to see it from anywhere in the world, unless they have somehow blocked it. They must have some pretty smart technology to be able to block it.

Under channels you will find find BBC 4 where you will find the programme.

That's exactly waht they do. If your pc is not in the UK, that is detected and the file is blocked from downloading.

what a shame Ian. They will probably produce it as a DVD at some point.
