Hi , hope someone can give me some advice on Netbooks . Just wanted one to use when i am away so I went to buy one this morning , only to be told i would have to get broadband mobile { or something like that } but couldn't use it abroad , eh ! what was the point of getting it then if i couldn't use it abroad ?. That was why i wanted one in the first place . I spoke to a fellow customer there , who said i didn't need to buy Broadband all i needed was a dongle and to get it in the country i was going , does that sound about right ? he also said i would have to get coverage ?? can someone tell me if it is worth me getting one , it all sounds so complicated .Any help would be most welcome .

Many thanks , Patricia

You will need a mobile broad band connection for TRNC and I bought Turkcell dongle for about 150 TL and then the unit card for either 50 or 70 TL which will last for 30 days from the day you start. the cheaper version has a lower use time cannot remember exact details but for me it works fine and where we really gain is by using Skype for all phone calls back to home or other countries and this makes the outlay justified. The dongle of course last forever and you can top up each time you visit and this can be done by phone on arrival or by popping into the Turkcell shop, kind regards

hello simbas, if you buy a dongle (unlocked) then it will work in most countries providing you but the native data sim card. For example you buy a turkcell or telsim dongle and take it with you to the u.k all you need to do then is purchase a data card in the u.k- i.e Orange, o2, vodafone etc. And change the settings of the dongle.

hope this helps

Hi Simbas - if it will help, this is what I do.

I bought a dongle in U.K and then you can top up by buying credit at newsagents, or phone shops, and then putting in into your computer (same as you do a mobile phone). The dongle cost me the same as the one I got here, for which I pay a monthly amount (Telsim). They both work on the same principle and are an absolute godsend. Use them anywhere, any time, whether half way up a mountain, or a motorway cafe or even somewhere far more personal.

Much easier to have two. It costs you, but they do then belong to you.

I got a G3 in U.K and a Telsim here!

Not at all complicated.

Good luck, whatever you dec\ide is the best option for you.

I have a net book which I use when travelling with an O2 dongle and a desk top which I use with a Telsim dongle - only because I didn't know I could get an O2 one unlocked. The Telsim dongle works on either system and costs 139TL with monthly cards from 14.99TL to 139.99TL depending on useage. I go for the mid range of 3GB for 45TL which is more than enough for the 30 days. I still find it easier to have the 2 dongles then I can contact my husband on skype when I'm away and it means he can still use the computer at home Hope this helps.

Hi Simbas, i did the same last year, bought a netbook and then bought a Telsim dongle opposed to a Turkcell one because the minimum you can buy with Turkcell is 4gb for 60tl where as the Telsim one starts at 15tl for 500mb which is enough for me whilst on holiday.

Simbas, when you get there, go to the Turkcell shop in Iskele near the little old Greek church - and carrying your pc.

The nice lady there will fit you up with the dongle, load your credit (60tl is plenty for a month) and then she will set it all up for you with PIN number password etc. You will walk out with it all working and will have made a new friend in the town too. When you need new credit just pop in and see her again and she will see to it for you in a minute.

Simbas - if it's NOT too late

A Netbook is a very small laptop that is light in weight and lasts for longer away from mains power.. BEWARE they are NOT 'fast' - they don't play high quality video well ..

I have a second hand laptop - IBM - four years old and a new Dell 1012 Inpiration - the old laptop BLOWS it away.. but the Dell can go EIGHT hours - emailing, browsing, etc before needing a recharge.

IF you STILL want a Netbook..and spend a lot of time in the UK - pop into Three store and get one for for 17.50 GBP / Month over 24 months.

You can get the dongle unlocked and use it in Cyprus - with a local data sim card.
