Hi all, tried to import car today - FACT: not a problem. Are the charges correct: Car import £750 and engine 1795 size at $5500 - lovely! so then drive it home I think. The car only worth £1200 not £1700 per glasses guide also.

The car has been in Cyprus coming up for 12 months. We only visit her 4 times per year.

Any other options - extended car stay to tomorrow then on the daily fine of £3.50 per day also.

The car is under british MOT/TAX and insurance.

Any advice or who to contact to discuss tomorrow would help!

Thx

If your visits are 4 weeks a dear car if its 4 months a cheap car compared to a hire car

The engine size is the second band 1600+ also diesel is more expensive

Thx, enjoyed the drive over wouldnt regret that - just may ship it back rather than pay £5K!!! and hire when here then. Dont understand why they charge this engine amount(money making). And need I say what all the brit cars do now??

Cheers.

Thanks i posted earlier reply but not appeared.

Think we ship it back to UK then based on those figures being correct.

Dont understand the high engine charges or what they are for (con) on top of import duty on value that over exceeds real price.

Thanks again.

Do all the brits import then or just drive illegally?

ljs201168,

"Do all the brits import then or just drive illegally?"

No. The sensible majority find out what the problems are in advance, then decide to but a car locally.

The others ignore local advice, bring a car to TRNC, then complain later about their tax and import bills and all the hassle they get.

Many had their fingers burnt when the police & customs started seizing every UK registered car they could find.

My wifes VW fox has been in the TRNC for almost a year now, End of May we need to start the Import Process, ie, pay import duties etc, but we will not be there until the end of the year at least....work commitments prevent our return home ! Does anybody know how much the Monthly Fine will be, I did think it was 60YTL/Month....anyone confirm ??

OR.....in our abscence can anyone reccomend somebody that can do it for us to keep it all legal and above board ?? Of course we will pay for such services

Geoff Famagusta City,

Are you sure it is 100YTL/month........very cheap I say, looks like we made the right decision to settle in North Cyprus.....cheaper than a cheap thing on cheap thing day....and would you like to Volunteer to set the car on fire, insured for 13K bought it for 9K so really you would be doing me a HUGE favour.

"put a match to it perhaps" are you sure your names Geoff and Not Richard Cranium????

Look out if your car is in the open. No tax and it may be seized regardless of your future options. See msg 10

Msg 8 & 9 spot on. Why do people still insist on ignoring all available info, there are at least 23 web sites, at last count, providing everything you need to know. 6 years ago it was just half a dozen MSN forums so people did make mistakes and passed on their errors for all those who followed But still they come!!!!!!!!

the car can be kept on U.k plates longer than 12 mnths as long as you haven't been here more than 360 days in 2 year period. you must go to police station to get your ins/outs, go nicosia takes 5 mins, don,t go Girne. Then take photo copy and original of log book, tax, mot, driving licence, passport and your blue temporary import form and ins/outs to customs in Nicosia. I did mine yesterday and got a further 3months temporary import. As long as you keep your U.K tax and Mot up to date it,s no problem. If you don,t go for your extention on time the fine is 60tl per mnth.

How do you manage to get the car through a UK MOT when you are out of the country? No MOT= No VEL.
