The headlines in the UK's 'big' papers today were shouting out what all 3 parties have NOT been telling us - because the truth is so painful a prospect they're all terrified of the loss of votes. That truth (which is no secret to most thinking people) is the sheer number of cuts in public spending any new govt. will be forced to make just to try and plug the whopping hole that's the National Debt. The experts believe it will take at least 4 years just to make ANY worthwhile impression. Over those 4+ years it will have to be a case of 'cut, cut and cut again' with the 1st year or so seeing a freeze (at the very least) or temporary abolition of regular financial perks we all take for granted. Only an honest party/government will dare to take this on in the long-term interests and benefit of the UK as a whole, knowing it will make them the most unpopular government in decades. I still feel that while being nowhere near ideal, the Conservatives have more openness on this issue

I't understand how anyone can say they don't care. It took hundreds of years, many deaths for the struggle towards democracy. It's a chance that millions in the world still don't really get. Such people may wake up one day to find things are not as they want. But who can you blame if you didn't bother to vote? Shame on you.

phylray - indeed. Shame on those who do not use their very hard-won vote. Especially us women. However, I, personally can understand those who do say "I don't care" anymore. To quote your messages 9/10, I have "woken up to find things are not what I want". I live in a country, which, to my mind, has no moral standards, no backbone, no work ethic. I live in a country where millions of pounds are ploughed into an NHS service that used to be the envy of the world - and not one where people are afraid of going into a hospital for fear that they will come out in a worse condition than that they went in with. A country where people have no respect for nothing or no-one. A country - where - yes - pensioners are expected to live on a pittance having worked all their lives. So, tell me, someone (anyone) which party I should vote for next week in Godforsaken Great Britain, because, frankly, "I don't care" - it's all the bloody same to me.

The voting system does not help. At the moment both parties know that they will get into office after a certain period of time. When they do they spend their time undoing what the other did during their term of office - hence quite a large proportion of our revenue is wasted - education and NHS are cases in point.
